Let me ask again:  what's wrong with 5 ... c5 ?  With careful play from Black, it looks a bit like a nice Steinitz for Black with a misplace queen for White.

Ah the Haldane Hack... might I assume, HgMan, you've never played Robin Haldane.  I agree it looks rubbish but when you play him... well somehow it isn't as bad as it looks.

But Martin paints a very rosy picture; Black's play can be improved.

What's wrong with the simple 6 ... c5 (or 5 ... c5, for that matter)?  It just seems to me that White's center crumbles pretty quickly.

White would play 6.Qg4, which gives you the line with 5.Qg4 except with an extra move that, White argues, is weakening.

After 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. Qh5 g6, what resources would white have to continue the attack?
