I'm sitting and looking at the Keybook II along with a game collection of Gedult's, and IM Lane's book (although Lane ignores Bf4).

In the Keybook II, Sawyer leaves no verbal comments and only lists 6 ... Na6 as an interesting sideline.  Most players opt for 7 Nxd4, but Sawyer's analysis seems to go off on a tangent to what I would expect.  Give me a few days and I'll see what I can come up with.

5. Be3 looks very good for Black, in my opinion. After 5...cd 6. Bd4 ef 7. Nf3 Nc6 black just has easy development, + 1 pawn. After 7...Na6 I also agree that black has a good game. Even 7. Nd4 e6  looks reasonable.  But I still don't think 4...c5 should be a good way for black to play in the BDG.

In the BDG keybook Sawyer gives 6.Bf4 cxd4 7.Nb5 Na6! saying, "Evidentally, Black can maintain a slight edge in all lines...".  Has this view been changed by a White nolvelty?  I wouldn't regard 6.d5 as "chickening out".  White is playing a variation of the Albin counter-gambit a tempo up and should have at least decent play after 6...a6! 7.a4 (7.Bg5) e6 8.Bc4 exd5 9.Nxd5 Nxd5 10.Bxd5.  I can see how 6.Bf4 could be a lot more exciting though.  What's the best way for White after 7...Na6?

The Brombacher Counter Gambit

5 Bf4!

The move recommended by David Gedult in his time...Diemer himself eventually conceded that this is the best move (although Diemer initially recommended 5 Be3, I'll let you explore that).

No matter how black takes on d4, 6 Nb5! is the principled continuation.

In any c5 variation, (here, a move earlier, a move later) I would recommend an immediate Bf4.

Remember that you're playing a gambit, don't chicken out and play something like d5!

I've played the BDG in several blitz games, but I meet this line a lot:
1. d4 d5 2. e4 de 3. nf3 nf6 4. f3 c5!?
I always respond with 5. d5, but never seem to get anything tangible. Any comments?
