You could try the Makogonov (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6) 5.h3!? - a personal favourite.

My favourite weapon is the samisch.

But I'm going up against an old club-mate soon in a round robin tournament. We must have had a hundred battles in the Samisch by now.

What's a good alternative to 5. f3?

I want to play c4 (ie. no barry), and I don't want to play Nf3 (hate the stupid knight blocking my f-pawn Wink).

What is good? Something aggressive will be nice. I want to fight back and put a zealous KID maniac in his place!

I am not so comfortable with the positions coming from the 4 pawns in the Dunnington 1. d4 book  Undecided and Watson's analysis in his benoni book are, as always, very convincing. I am currently checking out 5. Nge2 more closely. What other choices are there?

For my 2 cents... I've always scored best with the Averbakh Variation 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Be2 0-0 6.Bg5

Are the Barry and the Bayonet really the best ways to 'attack' the KID?; the former avoids it to some extent (but is a good practical try), whilst the latter is a theoretical and complex main line. If the Samisch is too theoretical for your tastes, then why not try 5 Nge2!? on which there is an excellent monograph by Forintos and Haag: the plan is clear Ng3, Be2, sometimes Bg5, and then h4!.

The 7. Nf3 b5!? line is supposed to be very good for white after 8.cxb5 a6 9.a4 axb5 10.Bxb5, but there are some sidelines, in which it is not entirely clear whether white is really better. But this line definitely is much easier to play for white than a proper Benkö gambit. I feel that after 7.Nf3 the move 7...b5 is possibly not entirely justified, while after 7.Be2!? (I can't remember why, but I used to play this move a couple of years ago) it is much better, because Bf1-e2 will often prove to be a useless move.

Yes, I once lost an important game against that Volga-like variation.  But more recently, in the final section of the U.S. 13th CC Championship, I won handily against the same line, with the help of the ideas in Vaganian's excellent 4 Pawns book.  If I recall correctly, he thinks that White is better in that variation.

But I think it's a line where things can go bad for White if he doesn't know what he's doing -- something true of the whole system, I suppose  Smiley

When I used to play the Benoni, I met the 4-pawns attack with the Volgagambit: 1. d4 Nf6  2.c4 c5  3.d5 d6 4.Nc3 g6  5.e4 Bg7  6.f4 0-0  7. Nf3 b5!? with interesting play, when Black has chances to take over the initiative. Not that I claim this being a refutation or something.

That is all I meant, really, not that Black is lost.   I do think that White enjoys a little more than his standard edge in this line, though others might disagree.

Nice talking to you.  Grin

Markovich: Well, in the Bg4 system white retains a lot of pressure for a long time, but I'm not entirely sure black is really seriously in trouble as long as he avoids (further?!) inaccuracies like playing a7-a6 (which is often just bad).

In the Na6 variation white seems to have a number of ways of keeping a slightly better position - as opposed to what all writers seem to claim accepting the pawn after 7.Be2 e5 8.fxe5 dxe5 9.Nxe5 looks just fine to me. Okay, you have to be somewhat careful and black will get his pawn back, but white will have a useful queenside majority.

The 6...c5 7.d5 e6 8.Be2 exd5 9.cxd5 Nbd7 system looks fairly okay for black though.

I do not like any of White's ideas in the original post  Tongue, and I think that 2. c4 is unmistakably White's best move.

Against the King's Indian I would strongly recommend the Four Pawns Attack.  It is most amusing to see this system deprecated in every KID repertoire book, but always with a new Black idea.  They never mentioned what happened to the OLD Black idea  Roll Eyes!

For example, at one time, 1. d4 Nf6  2.c4 g6  3. Nc3 Bg7  4. e4 d6  5. f4 0-0  6. Nf3 c5  7. d5 e6  8. Be2 exd5  9. cxe5 and now 9...Bg4 "!" was supposed to be Black's path to dynamic equality, but it is now recognized that Black is having trouble there.  The latest antidote is supposed to be 6...Na6, but I respectfully doubt its merits.

There is a good book by Vaganian for anyone interested in adopting this system.

<if you play h5 instead of Bxg7, he will play Nxh5 and then he will place his knight on g7.>
Now I do not know very much of this KI-stuff, but this theme is also very common in the Argentinian Attack:
1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.Be3 Bg7 5.Qd2 o-o?! 6.o-o-o c6 7.f3 etcetera. Here White plans Bh6, h2-h4-h5 and after Nxh5 immediately Rxh5 shattering Black's kingside position. So I wonder, if this idea is possible in the Barry Attack and it's relatives too?
The move order x.Bxg7 Kxg7 y.h5 has the disadvantage, that Black can defend by playing Rh8 preventing an invasion of the White heavy pieces.

I found the game, and I found a few others with a big name playing black.  See Mark Hebden play against his own pet system!  I think that says something about this system for black.

In reply to the original post, I think the Barry Attack/150 Attack repertoire is the most dangerous of the three options given by FusterCluck.  I have had a number of quick wins with these crude systems against Class A opposition (~1900).  I think the Barry Attack is a good one-game system, as it really does have a lot of sting after normal moves for Black.  But, I still think it is garbage, so I don't think it should be your main system.  Though, if you want to be practical, if 1900s can't find anything convincing over the board, it certainly should work for U1600.   Wink

If you want to learn these systems, Summerscale's A Killer Chess Opening Repertoire is probably as good as any other book to look at.  However, I think he omits the most challenging systems (or to be precise, the best move orders).  The problem with the Barry Attack is that Black has a few active systems that I think at least fully equalize for him.  One the simplest plans for black that I remember is the one used in Blatny-Ragozin (I think), where black plays an early ...Bg4 (before white's Be2), exchanges with ...Bxf3 upon Be2, and plays for an early ...e5 as a temporary sacrifice.  I remember black getting a terrible initiative.  (OK, a 1600 coming up with an idea like this close to nil!)  It's a very nice game anyway, so you should take a look at it!

Many of the systems that Summerscale recommends are quick-fix one-game systems that really shouldn't make your primary systems if you are serious about improving in the long term.  For example, the Classical KID is a good opening to learn, that will serve you well in the long term.  Also there many different ways to play a main line opening like this, so you don't get stuck if a line doesn't work (which is almost inevitable with these quick-fix systems).   Though, one of advantage of dabbling with these quick-fix systems, is that you see why they don't completely work (if you keep an open mind, and accept the possiblity your pet system could be refuted--guys, that also goes for Blackmar-Diemer!).

On another note, the replies in this thread have been really strange.  I never thought I would ever see "1600 players" and "excellent positional understanding" used together in the same sentence!

And if any find the Blatny-Ragozin game (if I have the names right) before I do, go ahead and post it!

As I said on 10.bxa5 i prefer either 10..Rxa5 or 10..Nd7. I usually play 10..Rxa5 and then 11..b6 or 11..Nd7. Of course I cannot be sure of how good really are these lines, but in the middle of fight they work well. Also the strongest players I have played against don't play the bayonet but other lines.
