I have a 100% record with the Austrian, but know nothing about it. I can only agree with Alumbrado in that 5...c5 is probably the stronger move. However, if white plays 5.a3, then this rules out 5...c5 too  Cheesy

But that's a topic for another thread... I think Nunn is a brave man to assess 6.Be3 Nc6 7.e5 dxe5 8.dxe5 Nh5 9.Bc4 as equal, if 9...Bh6 then 10.Qe2! seems quite promising to me, there's no snatching on f4 yet and if 10..Bg4 then 11.Rd1 and I would say white has an advantage after ...Qc8 12.Nd5.
Also 7.Be2 e6 8.Qd2 b6 9.O-O-O Bb7 10.e5 is a somewhat anti-positional yet dangerous idea...

As I have tried the Austrian Attack only once, I am absolutely not an expert.

MNb-Smits corr NBC H-428, 1998
1.e4 d6 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 g6 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.d4 o-o 6.Bd3 (or 6.Be3 Nc6 7.Bd3 so the question is, has White better here?) Nc6 7.Be3 Ng4 8.Bg1 e5 9.fxe5 dxe5 10.d5 Nd4 11.h3 Nh6 12.Bc4 Nhf5! and I had to fight for equality after 13.Qd3 Nxf3+ 14.gxf3 Nd6 15.o-o-o Qh4 16.Kb1.

After 6.Be3 Nc6 White has:
a)7.e5 dxe5 8.dxe5 Nh5 is equal according to Nunn.
b)7.Be2 e6 8.Qd2 b6 9.o-o-o Bb7 and Black did not fare badly.
c)7.Qd2 Bg4 and again Black did not have that bad results.
Since 2001 White scored a poor 44% according to my database after 6…Nc6.
So what is the problem for Black?
I would like to know very eagerly, as I would rather have White after 5...c5 6.d5!

Do you mean 5.Be3 or 6.Be3?

After [1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.f4 Bg7] 5.Be3?!, it seems to me Black can reply 5...Ng4!

However, after 5.Nf3(!) 0-0 6.Be3!? is indeed a strong move and has been used to good effect by Judit Polgar amongst others.

My advice for Black - steer clear with 5...c5(!) - although it is annoying that there is a semi-forced draw in the 6.Bb5+ line and even in this line White still has good chances for advantage - and I say this with a heavy heart, believe me!

In general I feel that Black is under real pressure in the Austrian Attack, but this is particularly so after 5...0-0.  Black is experiencing difficulties after both 6.Be3 and 6.Bd3 [6...Na6 7.0-0 c5 8.d5 Rb8 9.f5!? is the latest move to start giving Black sleepless nights].
