Just curious, after 3..Bc5 4.c3, what do you play?

3...Bc5 was one of my first loves, but I long ago gave up on 4. c3 f5

Yeah, I used to play that myself when I was a young man, and I scared the blazes out of a lot of unprepared Whites.  Yet still I managed not to do very well with it due to deficiencies in my own game.  I remember one game in particular where I was up against a much stronger opponent and I had a pawn on d4, while he had a pawn on c3 and no d-pawn.  In those days I didn't understand that the pawn on d3 would be strong all on its own, with chances of early or late promotion, etc., etc., and so I let it remain on d4 and be exchanged.  Live and learn.  I think I was rated about 1850 or so back then.

I myself don't play the Classical with 3...Bc5, but with 3...Nf6, 4...Bc5.  That way I don't have to face 4. c3, 5. d4 which to me, seems rather promising for White.

I have heard of the Marshall Gambit.  I tend to avoid the Lopez when playing white, though...

Would like to learn Archangel or Open from now on. Planning to give up my Marshall cos alas! it is too easily avoidable. The Breyer is just too slow for my liking, & the normal closed.... I just cant stand the Kt on a5. Anyways... both these closed systems cant rival Marshall, Open or Archangel when it comes to piece activity.

I use the Marshall gambit. That is when I get the chance. Nine out of ten players seem to avoid it and play either a4 or h3 instead of c3. Sad

Bumping ancient topics is punishable by death.

In other news, have you heard of the Marshall gambit?

3. ... a6 might be predictable but, hey, the best theoreticians in the world are still trying to find the best defense to it.  In the Lopez, White gets a steady advantage and no one has ever found the "best defense" with black.

Sometimes 3...f5, sometimes 3...Nf6 and 4...Bc5, sometimes 3...Bc5.

The Ruy Lopez is the most common continuation after 1...e5, so I am wondering how people play against it?
I play the line 3...g6 most of the time, and sometimes venture into the Open Defence.
