The line in question arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.cxb5 a6 5.bxa6 g6 6.Nc3 Bxa6 7.e4 Bxf1 8.Kxf1 d6 9.Nf3 Nbd7 10.g3 Bg7 11.Kg2 0-0 12.Re1 Ra6 13.e5 ....

In "The Benko Gambit Revealed" by GM McDonald he suggests 13. ... Ng4! 14. e6 fe6: 15. Qe2 Nde5! with a lot of compensation for the exchange, e.g.
16. Qa6: Rf3: 17. Re2 Qf8 18. Nd1 Rd3 19. Bf4 g5! 20. Be5: Qf3+ 21. Kh3 Be5: 22. Qc8+ Kg7 23. Qe6: Qe2: 24. Nc3 Nf2:+ 25. Kg2 Qf3+ 26. Kg1 Nh3+! 27. Qh3: Bd4# 0-1 (Jensen-S.Petrosian, Hamburg 2000)

I also have this book but i always wondered what if 14.Qe2! or after 14.e6?! fxe6 simply 15.Rxe6!?. I simply don't see anything for black  Sad

The "problem" with 12..Qb6 is that white can liquidate into a drawn engame after 13.e5. 12..Nb6 is my choice.

the computer says that white is better in all variations, so you can absolutely forget about it in the benko
because the computer simply doesnt see black's dynamic play and pressure on the queenside  Wink

Makes sense.  And here's what 12...Qb6 does:

1.  Inhibits white from developing his bishop.
2.  Prepares an immediate Rfb8.

So, maybe both moves are good.  What does the computer say?

The idea of Ra6 is to

a) keep controll of the 6th rank in event of e5 brake from white

b) put the queen on a8 thereby pressure d5 pawn, also if white plays e5, and pressure a2 pawn

Black get very harmonic placement of pieces, but is still down a pawn  Cool

Why 12...Ra6?  What does it do?  12...Qb6 looks better.

Benko Main Line without 12.h3 (12.Re1 Ra6)

Hi everybody!

I would like to discuss here I line that I have played as white and might face as black.

I have the book "The Benko Gambit" by Byron Jacobs and Andrew Kinsman and while it might be a bit dated on the recommendations, I still like the book.

The line in question arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.cxb5 a6 5.bxa6 g6 6.Nc3 Bxa6 7.e4 Bxf1 8.Kxf1 d6 9.Nf3 Nbd7 10.g3 Bg7 11.Kg2 0-0 12.Re1 Ra6 13.e5 dxe5 14.Nxe5 Nxe5 15.Rxe5

This is a game between Stohl-Zuger 1996
The game in question continued 15...Qd7 and in the notes they say that: "if 15... Rd6 (threatening ...e7-e6) then 16.Qf3 Qd7 17.Bf4 Rb6 18.Rae1 favoured White in Muir-Arduman, Pula 1997".

I think black has an annoying move though: 16...e6!
The idea is to open up the f-file and the d-file to get counterplay against the queen and the f-pawn. After something like 17.dxe6 fxe6 18.Re2 Nd5 Black has some play, although I haven't analyzed that much yet.
Another fantasy line might go:

17.Bg5 h6 (17...exd5? 18.Nxd5) 18.dxe6 fxe6 (18...hxg5? 19.e7) 19.Bxf6 Rxf6 20.Qg4 Rxf2+ 21.Kxf2 Qf6+ 22.Kg2 Qxe5 23.Qxg6 Rd2+ 24.Kh3 Rxb2 with a likely draw  or

20.Qe4 (20.Qd2?? Rd2) Rd4 21.Qe1 (on the more natural 21.Qe3 Fritz likes 21...Qa8+ with the idea 22.Kg1?! Rf3! or 22.Re4 Rb4 23.Rb1 Rf8! and black has a lot of nasty threats.) Rxf2+ 22.Kxf2 Qf6+ 23.Kg1 Qxe5 24.Qxe5 Bxe5 25.Re1 Bg7 26.Rxe6 Rd2 27.Rb4 Bxc3 28.bxc3 Kf7 and a likely draw.

What do you guys think?
