According to my investigations White has reasonable chances after 11...b5 12.g4 b4 13.g5. I was able to improve on Nikitin's analysis in NIC-37.
Another option is 13.Nxc6 Qxc6 14.Nd5 exd5 15.g5!?

Hello,

The line with 14.Bd5 does look very dangerous at the moment, as Mantraslider says very strong GMs have avoided 14...exd5 15Nd5 Qb7 16 e5 Ne6 where white can get two pawns for the peice, and leave black very congested. Don't see more concrete reasons but have a strong feeling it is there.
Instead of this line does anyone know the latest status of Nitkins old suggestion of 11...b5 12 g4 b4? The Nd7 -c5 idea has become almost a religon in these positions now, but with white's attack slowed down slightly with Rh-g1, maybe b5 is better?

Bye John S

Sorry, posting blindfold again... Playing 21.f6+ first makes my line work: 21...Bxf6 22.Qh6+ Kh8 etc...

1.How will White win after 21.Qh6+ Kh8 22.f6 Bf8 ?
2. After 13...b5 etc. 17.Qh5 g6 18.Qh4 even Fritz thinks that White has compensation after 18...exf5 19.Bxc5 dxc5 20.exf5. But 18...b4 19.Rh3 h5 20.gxh6 Nd7 might provide a defense.
For the sake of clarity: I play the Velimirovic Attack only as White and have good results with it. But Mantraslider mentioned exactly the only defense which worried me.

21.Qh6+ Kh8 22.f6 Bxf6 23.Nxf6 Rg7 24.Rd5 intending Rh5 should do it. If there are any more defenders of the black side after 13...Nxb3+ 14.axb3 exf5? then bring it on, but I am pretty convinced that 14...exf5 loses by force. Black might play 14...b5 and now a few games have continued 15.Nxe7+, but white can still continue the gambit after 15.Rg3!? and black still cannot take the knight.

I see that there is an error in my original post: After 13...b5 14.Bd5 Bb7 15.g5 Rfc8 16.Rg3 Bf8 17.Qh5 g6 white can of course not play 18.Rh3?? (posting blindfolded...) My intention was to ask for peoples opinion about 18.Qh4!? wich I think is a move mentioned by Golubev. It has not been played yet (a few games continue with 18.Nh6+) and the big question is if black finally can take the knight with 18...exf5 or if he should still decline it and play for instance 18...b4.

17.Rxg7 is great, but Bxf5 and I have found nothing but 18.exf5 Kxg7 19.Nd5 Qd8 20.Qh5 Rg8 21.Nxe7 Qxe8 22.Bg5 leading to a draw.

It might be true that  13...Nxb3+ 14.axb3 exf5 15.gxf5 Qa5 16.Kb1 Kh8 and now 17.Nd5 Qd8 is a though nut to crack, however: 17.Rxg7!! Kxg7?! (17...Bxf5!? connecting the rooks) 18.Qg4+ Kh1 19.Rg1 Bf6 20.Bh6 and black is losing.

OK, I have not succeeded in finding something after 14.Nxe7+ Nxe7 15.Qd2 Nxb3 16.axb3 d5! but 13...Nxb3+ 14.axb3 exf5 15.gxf5 Qa5 (f6 16.Bh6! and Kh8 16.f6!) 16.Kb1 (16.Nd5 Qa1+ 17.Kd2 Qxb2 18.Bh6 g6 is unclear according to Nikitin, but I think Black is better) Kh8 17.Nd5 Qd8 is a tougher nut to crack than the rather useless 16...Re8.
I have been interested in 14.Nxe7+ because I suspected 14.Bd5 etc. too. But maybe 16...Ne6
17.Ndxe7+ Nxe7 18.Nxd6 Qc6 19.f4 and 20.f5 is an idea?

I don't agree that 14.Nxe7+ gives white an edge, as 14...Nxe7 intending ...Nxb3 and ...d5 seems to be a good plan for equalizing. Besides, white would hardly play the knight to f5 to exchange it.

Also, I disagree that 13...Nxb3+ 14.axb3 exf5?! is a good idea, because the opening of the g-file is just what white wants, and he might be winning already: 15.gxf5 Qa5 16.Kb1 Re8 (16...Ne5 may have been tried before) 17.Nd5 and now there might follow Rxg7+!! with a mating attack, but I leave the fun of finding all the lines to whoever reads this (In fact, I am at work and cannot remember my analysis).

But again: After 14.Bd5!? why has the GMs not gives 14...exd5 a try? (See my original post)

I think the second piece sac 14.Bd5 is incorrect, due to the defense given by Mantraslider. At the other hand 14.Nxe7+ promises an edge.
Black should play 13...Nxb3+ 14.axb3 exf5 though, which is very unclear.

Two Sicilian Velimirovic questions

Consider this razorsharp line:

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bc4 e6 7.Be3 Be7 8.Qe2 a6 9.0-0-0 Qc7 10.Bb3 0-0 11.Rhg1 Nd7 12.g4 Nc5 13.Nf5!? b5 14.Bd5

Now I wonder why 14...exd5 15.Nd5 Qb7 16.e5 Ne6 has not been played more often. The ChessBase online db gives only 3 games, but to me it seems like this line might in fact leave black better off?

My other question is, after 14...Bb7 15.g5 Rfc8 16.Rg3 Bf8 17.Qh5 g6 what is whites best option? 18.Nh6+ as has been played  in some games, or maybe 18.Rh3!?, the latter I think was suggested by Golubev in his book on the Sozin Sicilian, but without giving analysis.

This line has not been played much lately, and I might obviously have missed the reason for it. But anyways, it's a very fascinating position, and I hope you folks here can help me.

Regards from the Mantraslider
