I guess you all know there's a well-known trap after 3...Qb6 4 Nc3! Nd4? (4...a6 5. Bxc6 Qxc6 6. d4 cxd4 7. Nxd4 Qc7 8. O-O a6 9. Bg5 e6 10. Re1 +-) 5. Nxd4 cxd4 6. Nd5! Qd8 (6...Qd6 7. d3) 7. Qh5! a6 (7...e6 8. Qe5; 7...Nf6 8. Nxf6+ gxf6 9.d3 +/-) 8. Qe5 f6 9. Nc7+ Kf7 10. Qd5+ 1-0, Smirin - Afek, Israeli ch (11), 1992

3.Na5 is an intersting move, and there is an article in a recent NIC Mag based on Kozul's games.

If a strong GM can play it regularly it must have some point.  Anyway it throws those Bxc6 players off their stride.  I know because I am one!

In another thread 2...a6 followed by b5 + Bb7 in the closed Sicilian is discussed.

Maybe a similar setup would also work well after 3...Na5 in the Rossolimo? For example 4.0-0 a6, 5. Be2 b5 or 4.d4 a6, 5.Be2 cxd4, 6. Nxd4 b5 or 4.c3 a6, 5. Ba4 b5 + Bb7.

White gets a Nimzo-Indian with colours reversed and an extra tempo: 5.exd5 exd6 6.Bxc6+ bxc6 and the plan is blockading with c2-c4 and attack the weak c-pawn with b3, Ba3 and Nb1-c3-a4.
In the Nimzo-Indian this plan known to be very strong for Black, so it must White serve well too; I tend to consider 4...d5 a positional blunder.

Might be a stupid question, but I am wondering why nobody plays 3. Bb5 e6, 4. 0-0 d5 ?
I mean, why not?
I know many games where the same position were reached with 1. e4 c5, 2. Bc4 e6, 3. Nf3 Nc6 4. 0-0 d5... and always thought black is fine.

But nothing really satisfying.

3...e6 I dont like because sooner or later it leads to French positions and I never played the French and dont want to start now just because somebody dont likes Open Sicilians.

3...d6 has a major drawback in the variations upon 7.Bxc6 in my eyes: 4.0-0 Bd7, 5.Re1 Nf6, 6.c3 a6, 7.Bxc6 Bxc6, 8.d4 cxd4, 9. cxd4 Bxe4 and all answers to 10. Nc3 or 10.Bg5 are far away from something I would like to play; best in my eyes is 10...d5 but I definitely dont like the position; its already an endgame, no complications, just one light figure left and this after only 14 moves!

3...Qb6 I dont like after 4.Bxc6 Qxc6, 5.Nc3 where you have the choice between losing the game with 5...d6 or playing e6 and upon d4 etc. you have a dull KAN setup.

3...Na5 ends most times also with this KAN/PAULSEN-position or any other black underdevelopment.

The only third move that is left for me, is 3...g6.

Hello Chesspub! I'm really happy to be a member of this forum!
I have problems also against the Rossolimo! The best answer i think is 3..e6 but the problems for me arises after 4.Bxc6!?. It seems that white has a lasting positional advantage. My opinion about the GM's favorite 3..g6 is that the positions after the typical plan for White 0-0, c3, Re1, d4 are not pleasent for Black to play! 3..Na5!? is very interesting and maybe this would be my choice for club play. (I used to play 3..d6 with reasonable results following the way the greek GM Halkias used to handle the position)

<You should not make decisions based on what your databases say. >
Very true and I have always had the feeling that 3...Nd4 must be better than it's reputation. But in case this feeling is wrong, the preparing Qb6 is worth investigating too.
Already mentioned is 3...Na5.
Of course there is nothing wrong with the normal g6 and 3...e6 followed by 4...Nge7 intending to wriggle the pair of Bishop's from White is also playable.
Choice enough.

You should not make decisions based on what your databases say. If you go 2 moves deeper in the position, scores often change completely.
The 3...g6-Rossolimo is perfectly playable with equal chances for black.

I play the Sveshnikow too. Aiming at this opening, the Rossolimo Sicilian is really the biggest hassle that can happen! I did check the different variations and normally there is always one I like. But not at the Rossolimo.
You can answer 3..e6 and you get a rather boring KAN/PAULSEN-setup with e6+d6+a6+Qc7...
Or you choose 3...d6, then White goes for 0-0-0 and you have a strong pressure on the d-file.
3...g6 is also not very satisfying in the end.
Forget about 3..Qb6: 4.Nc3 e6, 5.Bxc6 and the best you can get is worse KAN with underdevelopment.

In my eyes the Rosso is the major drawback of the Sveshni! I really dont know what to answer.

Just working on some Anti-Anti-Sicilians.

To get the Alapin tactical, is not so difficult. The closed Sicilian is for a Dutch-player not unwelcome, if you take a setup with e5+d6+c5+f5 it gets quite similar to the Dutch.

The biggest problem to avoid "positional" play is the Rossolimo.
Has somebody experience with 1.e4 c5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bb5 Qb6 ? Any other unusual setups? (I know 3...d6, 3...e6 and 3...g6; 3...Nd4 scores too bad to consider it seriously)
