Ntirlis Playing 1.d4 d5 is a great book, and I liked his coverage of 6...b6 very much. After the critical 7.cd Nxd5 8.Nxd5 black has to remember 8...Qxd5 9.Bc7 Nc6 intending Bb7, Bb4+ and sometimes a N sac on d4, but other lines are generally calmer.

It looks like it should fit well with the Tartakover. Unfortunately, White has scored pretty well in this line overall. Still the devil is in the details and I would have to dig deep to form a proper opinion.

David Vigorito includes it in his Chessable course:

Lifetime Repertoires: Vigorito's Queen's Gambit Declined

https://www.chessable.com/lifetime-repertoires-vigoritos-queens-gambit-declined/...

I'm curious to see his analyis, but have enough books to keep me busy for a while.

It is recommended in Playing 1.d4 d5 - A Classical Repertoire by Nikolaos Ntirlis too. More with the idea of Ba6, and sacing a pawn in a key line.

The theory on 5. Bf4 mostly focuses on either the 6...Nbd7 or 6...c5 lines. Pardon my ignorance but why isn't the tartakower setup (1. d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 Be7 5.Bf4 0-0 6.e3 b6) played more often?

Good question!

Thanks guys. I think the coverage of the Vienna in Lalic's QGD book put me off the idea of using it with Black, although that was only after a quick look. I'll probably persevere with 6...Nbd7 in the few games I have 5.Bf4 in, for now.

About alumbrado's suggestion, 4... Nbd7 5. Bf4 dxc4?! is not as good as previously believed in view of Gelfand-Graf Plovdiv 2003: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 Nbd7 5.Bf4 dxc4 6.e3 a6 7.a4! (this Kramnik anti-QGA approach makes very good sense when the knight is passively committed to d7, e.g. no Nb4).  Nb6 8.a5 Nbd5 9.Bxc4! Nxf4 10.exf4! (+= with the "Alekhine pawns"). You can find this game in NIC magazine 2003/8.

Actually my suspicion is that the sudden popularity of the Vienna (4... dxc4) is due to the strength of 5. Bf4! You can consider adopting the Vienna, where Ruslan's coverage on chesspub is fantastic. The only problem is that it is not very QGD-like.  Undecided

Certainly there are no immediate problems with the tartakower approach. White does rather confidently get += in the "typical" hanging pawn positions (i refer to NCO, Dautov's CD), and perhaps this is why the tartakower setup is not popular amongst the GMs. But White still must play good technical chess to convert his advantage.

The best thing to do is to play (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3) 4...Nbd7 and then if 5.Bf4, Black can play 5...dxc4! However, this is not neessarily compatible with the rest of your repertoire, especially if you are angling for a Tartakower  Undecided

Out of interest, what do any QGD players prefer in response to 5.Bf4, a move I haven't faced all that often? I know that the normal moves are as mentioned by Inn2, i.e ...Nbd7 or ...c5, but which of these is most popular in general, or do people feel is easier to handle for Black?  I have played 6...Nbd7 on the occasions I've had to face it, and tried to follow Sadler's book for guidance on the resulting positions, but find them quite tricky.  I also feel uncomfortable with ...c5 though! I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised as I remember reading that White has an extremely good score overall in the 5.Bf4 line in recent years, indicating that perhaps it should/will be seen more often? Certainly down at my level I get the Tartakower 9 times out of 10, assuming that it isn't an Alatortsev version of the Exchange that arises from the 3..Be7 move order I use.

Isn't 7.cxd5 Nxd5 8.Nxd5 exd5 9.Bd3 a little better for White?
Taimanov (1980) also suggests 7.Bd3 Bb7 8.Rc1.

After all the bishop f4 is not putting any pressure on the Black centre by pinnning knight f6..  ???
