2...e5 is almost certainly the best move.  2...e6 is another alternative.  Oldschool's suggestion of 2...Nf6 probably retains the most dynamism while avoiding tranposition to mainstream openings.  You might want to check out the thread on the Nimzovich defence for more of this.  I think we discussed the possibility of 1.e4 Nc6 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 d5 4.e5 Nd7 5.e6!? and other possibilities there.

Three options but unfortunately all are wrong. Assuming Black does not want to transpose to an open game with 2... e5 which by the way immediately equalises since the Vienna and the 4 knights both promise nothing for white, Black plays 2...Nf6.

3.d4 e5 (or 3...d5 4.e5 Nd7 intending Nb6)
3.Nf3 d5 4.e5 Nfd7 with the typical double-edged position

About 1.e4 Nc6 2.Nc3!?
If you are a Nc6 devotee, what is your choice after 1.e4 Nc6 2.Nc3!?
A) 2...e5 !?
B) 2...e6 !?
C) 2...g6 !?
What do you think about the pseudo-french set up with the B) option ?
Where is the counter play without the free c pawn ?
