This thread concentrates more on 7.o-o Nf6 8.Bf4. Still I am curious to Harvey Williamson's experiences with 8.b4.

Interesting, but not all Black's resources are exhausted. 7.o-o Nf6 8.b4 Bg4 9.b5 axb5 10.Nxb5 e6 11.Bf4 Be7 12.Bxd6 o-o and White has nothing.
Maybe Black can get more with 10...Bxf3 11.gxf3 e6 12.Bf4 Ne5.

Hello,
yes, Palkovi has a lot of rubbish line in his book. He perhaps did not check it with any computer engine at all. It is very brave (or rather dull) decision in case of super-hooper tactical opening like Morra. For an attemp to break "the most tough anti-Morra setup ever found", please visit http://www.mujweb.cz/www/rajmunde/partiebos_e.htm There is commentary to a game Boschma - Ward and very interesting 7.0-0 Nf6 8.b4!!? continuation.
Best wishes.
Patrik

The Correspondence chess news archive looks very interesting, but unfortunately I am not able to reach the ftp site. I hope it is a temporary problem.

Yes it is a good defence, and the Palkovi line is not trustworthy.
Maybe this is why certain Morra players prefer to play 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.c3 and 2...d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4  Wink
The first one avoids the ...d6, ...a6 defence while the second invites a Dragon...

For more information on this line you might want to check out issue 91 of correspondence chess news:

for the complete archives (free).

<Is Palkövi's line rubbish?>
Probably: 9.Nh4 Rg8 10.Qh5 Ne5 11.Be2 h6 was also good for Black, Shipman-Gray,2000.
White has other options of course, but 6...a6 is a good defense against the Morra Gambit.

1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.c3 dxc3 4.Nxc3 Nc6 5.Nf3 d6 6.Bc4 a6

After these moves the normal set up with 0-0 and Qe2 is not good because Black still has Bg4. The main line is

7.0-0 Nf6 8.Bg5 e6

where Black can continue h6, g5 and Nh5. IM Palkövi suggests in his book "Morra gambit" that White instead could play

7.Bg5 Nf6! 8.Bxf6 gxf6 9.Nh5

However, it seems to me that Black is better after both Qa5 and h5. This is a recent game I played:

9...h5 10.O-O e6 11.f4 b5 12.Be2 b4 13.Nd5 exd5 14.exd5 Qb6+

and Black is winning. Is Palkövi's line rubbish?
