Thanks. I always thought, that White must be somewhat better because of the lousy bishop on c8. Still I assume that White should play 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bf4 Bd6 4.Bg3.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

In fact, the 2...e6 move order is ideal for meeting the London: 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bf4 Bd6! ^ 4.Bxd6 cxd6 (4...Qxd6 is fine too, of course, but this looks more interesting), covering the e5 square, opening the c-file for Black and allowing the possibility of a minority attack.

Cannot White play a favourable London System with 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bf4 ?

That's a contradictio in terms.

Thanks, unknown master.  I was unaware of the move order finesse with 2...e6.  Kasparov recently played the QGA with 2...e6 and I didn't know why.  James Rizzitano is writing a repertoire book for Black based on the QGA for Gambit (due in September).  It will be interesting to see if he discusses that move order.

I agree that 2 .. e6 is good. I dont see anything wrong with Nf6 either other then that you allow the Torre (which is hardly a threat). In any case as soon as white plays c4 you take the pawn and you're in the QGA.

After 1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 (or 1. Nf3 d5! d4!) 2... a6?! probably isn't such a good idea for Black since after that White isn't forced to play c2-c4 anymore! Khalifman suggests 3. Bg5!? with some advantage for White and probably he's right because the move a6 isn't particularly useful in that position.
Instead 2... e6! clearly is the best response for Black if he wants to transpose in the QGA and therefore prefered by almost all the specialists of the QGA (Anand, Rublevsky, Kasparov). After 3. c4 dxc4 White can try to exploit black's move order with 4. e4!? but in practice Black is doing well after this... (4... b5! 5. a4 c6! 6. axb5 cxb5 7. b3 Lb7 8. bxc4 Lxe4 9. cxb5 Nf6) Have a look at Vallejo Pons - Kasparov, Linares this year.
Even after 1. d4 d5 2. c4 dxc4 3. Nf3 e6 is considered to be the best move ( may be 3... a6!?)
The problem after 3... Nf6 is the gambit variation 4. Nc3 which is terribly dangerous for Black and so far Black hasn't managed to reach equality yet!

There is no reason to avoid 3...a6 I do not see any arguments in its favour. First White can choose 4.e4!?,
Secondly, 4.e3 e6 5.Bc4 Nf6 6.Qe2 c5 7.dc5 is the Furman system which Black could have avoided had he played c5 instead of ...a6. In that case Black could meet 6.Qe2 with cd4 7.ed4 Nc6!?
In general, if you want to avoid 3...a6, it is better to play 3.e4! (not to mention 1.e4!)

Still White has avoided 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.Nf3 a6!?
So what about 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 a6 ?

If you reply 2...Nf6, White may well play 3.c4 and you still get your QGA.  However, if you answer 1.d4 with 1...d5, you are going to need a response for a number of openings in which White does not play an early c4 - the Colle, London, Torre, etc.  These openings are covered in the d-Pawn Specials section of this website.
