why not d4? According to PowerBook 2004 this is the most played move and has the biggest percentage of wins

I usually play d4 myself in this position. I have had great results with it. The main plan after the exchange of pawns is usually to attack the weak d5 pawn with Qb3, Bg2 , Nc3, Nf4 and usually Be3.

e4 instead of e3 is much worse, few have tried it and it is very weakening as far as the black squares are concerned.

Hi everyone,

I'm playing the English according to Tony Kosten's "Dynamic English" for some years now, and I'm still very happy with this great book. Occasionally, playing in the internet, I have to face an interesting fourth move which is not covered by the book:

1. c4 Nf6 2. g3 e5 3. Bg2 Bc5 4. Nc3 c6!?

I'm just an experienced club player (ELO -2000) who likes to stick to what he knows, so I continued 5. e3 O-O 6. Nge2, but after 6... d5 I didn't like my position. So I asked a German IM from a club of my hometown what he thinks about the position after 4... c6, and he came up with 5. e4.

I looked at this with fritz8 for a while, but once again, after 5... O-O 6. Nge2 d5 7. cxd5 cxd5 8. exd5 Na6, I'm still not happy.

Any suggestions? (Mr. Kosten? Smiley)
