M. Pytel,

Thanks for the line!  It's one I hadn't seen before, but then I don't usually play Nf6 and e6 in response to 1.d4 and 2.Nf3.  I may try it now that you've shown an interesting way to spice up White's life a bit.

I don't know if it's not too late for a reply, but in my opinion a tricky line involving a queen sacrifice is worthy of attention. This line was previously considered as a simple blunder, but please see the game below:

A. Bagheri - Y. Murey Paris 2003

1. d4 e6 2. Nf3 c5 3. c3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Qb6 5. Nbd2 Qxb2 6. Nc4 Qxc3+ 7. Bd2 Qxc4 8. e4 Qxf1+ 9. Kxf1 Nxe4 10. Qc2 Nxd2+ 11. Nxd2 Na6 12. h4 Be7 13. Rh3 Nb4 14. Qb3 cxd4 15. Rg3 00 16. h5 d5 17. Nf3 Nc6 18. Rc1 Bd6 19. Rg4 e5 20. Rg5 h6 21. Qxd5 Ba3 22. Rxc6 bxc6 23. Rxg7+ Kxg7 24. Qxe5+ Kg8 25. Qxd4 Be6 26. Qe3 Rab8 27. Qxa3 Rb1+ 28. Ke2 Re8 29. Ke3 Ra1 30. Kf4 Rxa2 31. Qe3 Ra5 32. Ne5 Bc8 33. Qg3+ Kf8 0-1

White playing Bg5 in the 3rd move can avoid it by replying 4. e3 on c5 which however, transposes to typical Torre positions.

To add to Julian's post I suggest that you also play d5 at some point or another (usually after Nd2). The key point is not letting white play e4, at least without giving up some positional advantage.

Thanks!

Actually, I've decided to take your advice about ...c5 and ...b6.  Maybe I will use it against the 'normal 3.Bg5 Torre move order as well (instead of 3...h6 and a later...d6) so that I don't have to learn 2 systems against the Torre Attack.

I suggest that after c3 you play the following moves (in logical order) e6, Be7, Nd7, b6, c5 and 0-0. Black will reach an equal position where he can easily stop white from playing e4 for a long time.

Hi,
I want to play Nimzo/Bogo Indian as black, and answer the Torre 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bg5 with 3...h6 and usually ...d6 soon after.  Do I have to learn a whole new line against the Torre if white plays 3.c3, intending 4.Bg5?  I hope 3.c3 is giving up something that black can take advantage of to reach a reasonable position without having to do too much more preparation.  From looking at the recent games of GM's,  I see 3.c3 is being used as a way to enter the Torre Attack.  Any suggestions?
Thanks,
