This is very intriguing.  7 ... Bc5 is just plain weaker than 7 ... Nxe4 (though I can appreciate the temptation of 7 ... Bc5 for the diehard Archangel player).  And I thought that 9 Bc2 was more testing than 9 Nxe5 Nxb3 10 Qxb3.  At this point, Black has 10 ... Qf6 and 10 ... Nd6, which is probably stronger, though White has a number of options at move 11 (Bf4, a4, Re1, c4, Qd1, & Nd2)...

Khalifman gives 7...Bc5?

In the Panczyk  line he gives 9.Nxe5 instead of 9.Bc2.

Interesting.  I rather thought this move was out of favor, but if Khalifman recommends it, I'm sure it will likely enjoy a renaissance.  It appears to have the advantage of dissuading Black from entering wholeheartedly into the Archangel with 7 ... Bc5.  After 7 c3 Bc5, Black hasn't scored well.

Presumably, the critical line is 7 c3 Nxe4 8 d4 Na5 9 Bc2 exd4 10 b4 Nc4 11 Bxe4 Bxe4 12 Re1 d5 13 Nxd4 c5! (Panczyk).  Has White found improvements in this line?

7.c3 is the move in Khalifman's book.

What is currently White's strongest move here after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 0-0 b5 6 Bb3 Bb7 ?

The primary candidates are 7 Re1, 7 d4, 7 c3, 7 d3.  Which one appears to be holding up best at the moment?

I dont think there is a bust i play teh white side of the lopex but when i do play the black side i try for an Archangel. Its one of the best ways to go for a win. No refutation just lots of tactics.

What is the current status of the Archangelsk and New Archangelsk?  Does anyone give them a bash?

This is an aggressive and uncompromising line(1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O b5 6. Bb3 Bb7)
Is this why Gms do not that play it that often or is the main line considered to be better than the Archangel?
