So there is nothing new under the sun and this is just another case of old wine in a new bottle.

"his novelty is 5.Ng3"
What? This was the pet move of my hero already more than 90 years ago! He defeated Alekhine once with it and won also a fantastic sacrificial game against Hönlinger. Anyone interested in the problem of building an king's attack with piece play - or defending against it - should pay attention to the games of Spielmann with this line.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

The strongest reply to 5.Ng3 is 5...c5! attacking the center. Further 6.Nf3 Nc6. And even further 7.Bb5?? Qa5+ what happens quite often in blitz.

5...h5!? is possible when white should answer 6.h4 . Now both sides have weak points (g4 v. g5).
An old but not so wellknown trap is 5...h5 6.Bg5?! h4! 7.Bxf6?? hxg3 8.Be5 Rxh2 9.Rxh2 Qa5+ 10.Qd2 Qxe5+ 11.dxe5 gxh2 and Black is winning.

Well 5.Ng3 e5 is my first instinct for black, though I must confess I know little about the Caro-Kann.

5. Ng3 is not a novelty, it's been played many times. I don't play the Caro-Kann as Black, but I like the immediate 5...h5! here to exploit the awkward knight on g3. If White lets you, you can continue with h4 and harrass the knight. Probably White will play 6. h4 then, but that leaves the knight on g3 less well defended. You could follow with Bg4 and later e6, Qc7, and Bd6 and annoy the poor knight on g3.

You could also play for an early c5 to free your position since White's development is a little slow in this variation.

I play a lot of off beat systems mostly do to the fact that Morozevich does the home work for all of us in love with discarded lines! I love to play The Bronstein Larsen Variation of the Caro-Kann. Some says its bad but others think its still play able. That debate is somthing for another thread but i have a question. My friend at the club plays his own line against it! He wont take the Knight on F6 Play proceeds as follows 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3. Nc3 de 4. Nxe4 Nf6 then his novelty is 5.Ng3. I dont really know how to repsond. I currently play a King Side Fianchetto and hope for the best as I am a kings indian player as well but it looks kind of wierd.

Any thoughts or ideas would be nice. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
