After 12.Bd4 is there anything wrong with simply 12…Bxd4?  The exchanges produce an open field against white’s king position, which can easily be attacked by all of black’s pieces.  Being a pawn down actually helps black because there is less obstruction blocking his own pieces, and some opponents may try to hold onto the extra pawn too hard by contorting themselves into a lost position.  13.Qxd4 Qb6 14.Nxd5 cxd5 15.Qxd5 Be6 16.Qb5 Qf2 17.Rd2 Qe1+ with a draw if black wants it.

Volokitin's h5-h6! seems to be a problem, as I wrote in CT. For the moment, I would be rather unhappy to play this line with Black. Maybe more analyses are needed. Regarding the faith: I hardly have faith in any variation, for either side Smiley Chess is too complicated for us mere mortals. If you have an idea what to play - you can play, that is all. If you know more than your opponent, you can have some practical advantage.

Mikhail, thanks for the great article!
Do you still have faith in 13. ... Re8?
The variation with the quick h4-h5-h6 looks quite convincing and black seems to be paralyzed indeed after 20.a4!
Or does anyone else have a new idea?
Otherwise, it looks like black should look for improvements in other variations.
One possibility is pointed out in the article: 12. ... Bd4: 13.Qd4: Qb6!? 14.Na4 Qa5 15.b3 Be6!?
Now 16.Qe5 could be answered with 16. ... Qb4 17.c4 Nf6 (17. ... Qa3+ 18.Qb2 Qb2: 19.Kb2: Ne3 20.Re1! and as the knight has a great outpost on c5, white enjoys a great advantage) 18.Qc5 a5 19.Qb4: (white has other possibilities of course) ab4: 20.Bd3 Rfd8 21.Kb2 and black should be equal or just a little bit worse.

Great article Mikhail, nice work.

Indeed!  The analysis was excellent--it's also refreshing to see a GM admit and correct mistakes in earlier analysis.  And what a game!   Cheesy

As this forum seems to be a bit sleepy in the last days I will try to revive the discussion.
What do you think about the variation which arises after 1.e4
c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cd4: 4.Nd4: Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 0-0 8.Qd2 Nc6 9.0-0-0 d5 10.ed5: Nd5: 11.Nc6: bc6: 12.Bd4 e5 13.Bc5 Re8.
As there doesn't seem to be much play for black in the critical variation of the 13. ... Be6 variation (was discussed in another thread) and TopNotch's idea seems to be refuted by Kosteniuk, we should focus our attention on this variation.
So give me your opinions:
What do you think about the endgame after 14.Nd5: cd5: 15.Qd5: Qd5: 16.Rd5: Be6?
Is it an easy draw (one could think so as nobody played it lately) or does black have to work hard?
What do you think about the critical variation 14.Ne4 Qc7!  ?
And what about the "forgotten" 14.Bc4?

Happy posting!  Grin
