Markovich might be a bit too harsh. I recall a thread on the Vienna - do not ask me which one - on 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 exf4. It was not that easy to prove a clear advantage in all lines.
Still 3...d5 is preferable IMO.

2.Sc3 looks like a real good idea to me.  Special thanks to the monograph of Christoph, after reading it I played several blitz games against an aljekhine adherent on the net with good results.

Against 2. ...e5 I´m looking forward to 3. f4 exf  4. Bc4 with a transposition to the Duras Defence of the KG!  Cheesy

3...exf4? is a ridiculous move because of 4. e5.  Black's only good move is 3...d5.

Zarvox, MNb: You are right.

I'm back to the drawing board. In practice I doubt that many black players will play 2. ...e5.

Most black players choose the Alekhine to avoid as much of theory as possible. After 2. ...e5 white seems to have a vast choice between the vienna, 4 knights, the petroff and my dubious move order. Too much to bear for the standard alekhine player I guess Wink

And the Duras Defense of the Kg arises after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Bc4 Nc6!
It is not very likely, that this position will be reached via the Alekhine Defense.

But the normal and best move is 3...d5 here, then you have to be prepared to play the Vienna.

I don't know if I have time to write a monography about the Vienna since I am currently occupied with another project.

I will, however, be glad to state anything about my work about 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3! I played it for numerous years, but of course since I don't encounter the Alekhine much on my level, I don't have too much relevant experience.

As for the proposal of an immediate ...Nb6, if I am not mistaken this leads to a position similar to a position that arises in the Nimzovich Defence (1...Nc6), but I am not sure of that at the moment since I am not at home and therefore have no books (and no other material on my hand).

But, if there are any questions about the topic, I'd be happy to answer them as soon as I can!

Must admit that I don't personally fully trust 3...Ne4; hence my choice of 3...Nfd7!?, although of course 2...e5 is probably objectively best!
So 3...Nfd7 4 f4 is certainly an idea, but is ...e6 then forced? Black can often 'compromise' with ...Nb6 in these lines to get the Bc8 out, rather than try to transpose to a pure French.

The website is worth a look.  Wisnewski gives 3...Nfd7  4. f4 c5  5. b3 e6  6. Qg4 as transposing eventually into same position that arises from 4...e6.  He proposes a setup with d-pawn on d2, knights on c3 and f3, bishops on e2 and b2, queen on g4.

I like your idea ...Nb6, since with Black's QB out, it casts doubt on the constructiveness of 4. f4.

regarding (2):

I just discovered some interesting analysis at Christoph Wisnewski's homepage , "1.e4 Sf6 2.Sc3!? - So schlägt man die Aljechin-Verteidigung!"  (Its in german...).

Most analysis is available for the variation:
1. e4 Sf6 2.Sc3 d5 3.e5 Sfd7 4.f4 e6 5.Dg4!?
... that is not covered in any of my Aljechin books.

The Qg4!? is not a new idea in this "french" type of posistion, but black could easily go wrong... Tongue

Thanks to Andy and John; Alekhine 2. Nc3

(1) I would like to express my thanks to Andy Martin and John Cox for an excellent "1. e4..." column this month.  For me, John's material on Alekhine's was particularly worth looking at.  John's recently published "Starting Out" book on this defense is an excellent introduction.

(2) It seems that if Black wants dynamic play with winning chances, a good try after 1. e4 Nf6  2. Nc3 is 2...d5  3. e5 Nd7.  The move 4. e6 is considered in the column -- though even more on this subject would be useful; e.g., one or tw of Hector's games.
