Thanks for the info gentlemen. Much appreciated.

I found Sam Collin's new 'Understanding the Chess Openings" from Gambit at my local Borders today. I've spent just an hour or so with it, but for class level players like myself, it looks like a terrific book and just what I was looking for. 35 pages are devoted to the ideas behind the various Sicilian lines. Most of the info covered is on the concepts and plans of each one as opposed to a lot of theory. Hopefully I can use this as a starting point to launch into the ChessPub Sicilian sections.

As a start I can begin with White's main idea behind the Najdorf 6.Bg5. I only have to quote Nunn: the typical plan is to randomly hack towards the opposite king.
But I doubt, if this is much help. Undecided

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

You could try posting a specific opening line and asking a question about it.  Like "...bla, bla, bla and now white can play either 9.Nxd4 or 9.Nb3.  Which is better?"  Sometimes that will attract attention and generate a discussion.  Sometimes it won't.  It's hard to predict.  Maybe if the question is too narrowly drawn, it reduces the universe of people who would be interested in that particular line and you won't get many (if any) responses.  However, if the question is posed too broadly, like "I'm considering playing the Najdorf and would like to know which is the best variation?" you could end up with an unwieldy barrage of information from people debating the merits of the 15th move of a sub-variation in the Sozin Variation and the discussion then will start to swirl around that, to the exclusion of everything else.  So, it's better to seed the ground first by asking a question about a specific line that you are interested in.  Whatever you do, don't ask your question in a way that could tempt the BDG players to jump in and start trying to convert you to the BDG.   Wink

I agree.  The real benefit of the site and the e-books at the moment is that they are up to date, and so complement existing and older literature rather well...

Not all the sites in chesspub give enough details or annotations for one to learn a new opening from scratch.

Some sites give you so much information, you never need to buy a book. But the Open Sicilian site is probably the worst here to learn an opening, mainly due to Fed's light annotations in the past. I know, because I tried to learn the Taimanov Sicilian using only Chesspub, but finally concluded I didn't learn enough from Fed to be able to play it confidently OTB. With Tony taking over however, things are improving very quickly.  Grin (p.s. tony, more Taimanov please!)

Ideally, one should get a book on an opening, AND follow up with Chesspub. I don't foresee Chesspub being a real substitute to opening books yet, espcially for beginners.

I'm new to both the site and the Sicilian opening. I'm wondering how best to utilize the site to learn the ideas behind the various lines as opposed to just the obvious large theory content. I realize most here are probably very well versed in these lines, and that the site is probably designed for the more knowledgeable in the theory. But I thought I would at least ask.

I took a quick look at the e-books, but I didn't see much discussion on ideas. Are there particular games in the pgn files that would help, or do I need to purchase some books instead? Thanks in advance for any insight and help!
