	the g6 pawn is the head and the d6 pawn the tail. And the influence of the g7 bishop on the long diagonal is the fire breathed out by the dragon. But this is a funny dragon cuz it's breathing fire backwards

	The Cambridge University Chess Club magazine, Dragon, used to have (and may well still have) an image on the cover which showed the Dragon pawn formation with a picture of an actual dragon overlaid on top of it. Basically the g6 pawn was the head, the d6 pawn was the wing, and there was a pawn on a6 for the tail. If there is any interest I could try and put up an image somewhere, but frankly it wasn't very convincing.

	Thanks tafl! This is what I was looking for.. (though I must admit that fitting the constellation with the pawn formation was a bit difficult..)

	The Dragon is only indirectly named after the serpent. The name was given by the strong player and amateur astronomer Dus-Chotimirsky and refers to the resemblance between Black's kingside formation (pawns and bishop) and the star constellation Dragon. That star constellation in turn was once named after a mythical beast, but probably by men with an imagination more vivid than is commonly found today.

	Hi all, a silly question really, but I couldn’t help asking: Why is this opening named as the “dragon”? I’ve read once that black’s pawn formation looks like a serpent, but I cannot see how.. (I mean, the Pirc, etc. looks almost the same way).
