Hi!

After 8 Qd2 if Black replies with 8...exd5 then 9 Qe3+ is sharp and somewhat annoying for Black.
So after the recommended 8...h6 then White has 9 Nh3!? exd5 10 Nf4 with an interesting game ahead that is more dynamic than just retreating to f3.

The fact that Black has softened his kingside with ...h6 can be a significant factor. The queen on d2 is 'developed' and allows a future Rd1 etc. The idea of Q-b3 is not that important if Black maintains a b7, c6, d5 structure as b7 can easily be defended.

Glenn,

I haven't studied the position, but there is something fishy about Black's moves.  When Black fianchettos (or is it fianchettoes ???) there's a general rule that you don't want to push the centre pawn nearest as well.  In this case, as White, I'd be looking for ways to take advantage the dark squares around the Black king.  I don't see how 8. Qd2 helps White in this cause and I don't know how White knows already that his queen belongs on d2.

I trust your 7.Nf3 far more than the Qd2 line but I wish I had the dark-squared bishop! Smiley

Just curious if after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 4.Bg5 Ne4 5.cxd5 Nxg5 6.Nxg5 e6 7.Qd2 h6 8.Nf3 if White was better (or worse or equal) off here than in the similiar variation with 7.Nf3?  In some variations it seems useful to have the queen already on d2 but in much of the analyis in the 7.Nf3 variation White's queen goes directly to b3.

In case anyone wondered why I'm asking such a seemingly trivial question it's because I like the idea of the 7.Nf3 system (recommended by Palliser in "Play 1.d4!") but still feel uncomfortable with my suggestion for Black posted here sometime ago. Unfortunately (for me anyway  Undecided  ) that post didn't generate any interest.

For the record here is that old post:
Quote:
I was looking at the following line recomended In "Play 1.d4!", 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bg5 Ne4 6.cxd5 Nxg5 7.Nxg5 e6 8.Nf3 (I prefer 8.Qd2 but of course that can be quite complicated or similiar to 8.Nf3 if Black plays 8...h6.) exd5 9.b4 O-O 10.e3 c6 11.Bd3 Bg4 12.O-O and now instead of the book 12...Nd7 Fritz suggests 12....f5!?.  After 13.h3 Bxf3 (13...Bh5!?) 14.Qxf3 f4, Black looks like he's doing well to me.  Any thoughts from anyone on this?
