Editor is "Chrysalis" (new name for Batsford and one name to make some bookwriters angry  Undecided )...

Buy it on Amazon:

http://www.chrysalisbooks.co.uk/search/index.jsp?by=2&term=Psakhis&x=40&y=8

or

http://www.scacchi.biz/catalogo/catalogo.asp?lingua=I&T=R&C=Psakhis

Seems to be some bargain on Amazon for UK delivery ...

Volume IV is "French Defence - Steinitz,Classical and Other Systems - Lev Psakhis 2004 - ISBN: 071348941 3"
chapters 6,7,8 are about Burn variation

Toppy,

Volume IV.  He gives one chapter to the Rubinstein and one to the Burn.

I think 8 Qd3 is more dangerous for Black (Nf3 will follow).  That said, Psakhis dismisses 8 Nf8 as passive, but it may well be pretty good for Black; after all, trying to take some life out of the position is in Black's best interest.

I agree that the Psakhis book is indispensible, but also think it's the weakest of the four volumes--lots of light analysis, lots of holes, and lots of overlap that disagrees with itself.  He'll transpose moves and in one instance claim a good position for White, and then in another suggest that White is in trouble...

I guess I'm getting too picky in my old age.  I loved Psakhis' The Complete French except that the type face made it impossible to figure out what line he was studying at a given moment.  This new series fixes most of those problems, using bold face and different styles of brackets much more effectively.

Also, Psakhis does a good job of updating several key lines and fleshing out ideas that were only hinted at in his single volume on the French.

Having said all that, I felt that  Psakhis left the reader in the lurch just as positions started to get interesting.  He has the pandemic malaise of stopping at a seemingly arbitrary point and proclaiming one side better than the other (or worse, the position is "unclear") without explanation.

He is opinionated, which is necessary for a good author on an opening, and we have our theoretical disagreements but overall, I consider his volume 4 (Steinitz, Classical and other lines) to be an indispensible buy for anyone who wants to score after Black plays 3....Nf6 in the French.  Yeah, it's even better than Watson in many ways!

I hope this answers your question, Castlerock!

I haven't yet bought the fourth volume as yet. How is the book? First three are great reference guides.

Oh shucks.

I guess 1...e5 wouldn't be in a French thread. Sad

Oh well, I like my humour drier than a martini (stirred, not shaken).

Going back to the original question about the Alekhin-Chatard Accepted...

I've never actually seen 8...Na6 before.  I always thought Black's best was to put the Queen back where it belongs on d8 and thank his lucky stars White wasted a tempo un-developing his Nc3.

However, I did find the game Vouldis-Luther (Fuerth 2002) in Psakhis' French Defense:  Steinitz, Classical and other Systems (2004) p.189.  Psakhis says that 8...Na6 isn't "convincing".

1...e6 doesn't lead to 3...exd4 so it will have to be 1...e5. After 4.Qxd4 I propose 4...f5. Call it CASTLEROCK-FRENCH GAMBIT. One more ingenious way to lose a pawn and a game Grin

Ok, 1.e4 e5 2.d4!? d5?! 3.Nc3?? exd4! and Black is probably winning.
Why so? 4.Qxd4 must be at least slightly better for White surely?

One must assume however that basqueknight meant 1...e6

"I dont care where it starts"
If this is really true: 6...h6 as I have argued in another thread.
