Azmaiparashvili is absolutely amazing. He is probably the only person who can maintain a 2670+ elo sticking to the modern, pirc and philidor.   Shocked

It was of course Donner who became the first GM to lose toa Chinese player when Liu Wen-Zhe smashed him up in the 'Chinese Attack' (1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.Be2 Bg7 5.g4!?).

But of course we do not need this thread to recount tales of Dutch sporting ignominy ... there is the football thread in the Chit Chat section for that Wink

Dutch GM's Donner and Jeroen Piket - the latter only in his early days.

Smsylov , I 'd forgotten about Viktor Korchnoi.

He had a great win against Fisher in the Be2 Austrian , but as you rightly point out the world championship match he lost in 1978, the final game was a Classical Pirc

While Fischer did indeed use the Pirc once as a surprise in the World Championship, Korchnoi deserves the credit for relying on it against Karpov in World Championship play.  He got reasonable, but slightly inferior positions with it.  In fact, Karpov's play helped to convince me that the Pirc is ultimately not quite viable at the very highest levels.

Fischer used it once against Spassky's Austrian attack in the World Championship

Petrosian in the 1970s played a few games with it and Botvinnink as well, although I'm not sure off the top of my head whether these arose out of the Modern move order.

Topalov got smashed by Kasparov in a very famous game-poss a game of the century.
But in terms of regulars, Speelman, Nunn, M Gurevich, Timman,Seirawan,Chernin, Azmairaparashivili (I've probably mispelt his name !!)  and in the past but not so much today Van Wely played it before he switched to the Sicilian

Famous players and experts may be two different categories and as stated above there is an inevitable overlap between Modern/ Pirc move orders.

Best wishes

Andrew

Many have used it as an occasional weapon (Botvinnik, Fischer, Korchnoi) but few have had it as the backbone of their Black repertoire.

Timman, Seirawan and Nunn played it a lot in the 1980s.  Anand has also played it, although is now very much a 1...e5 or 1...c5 man.  Khalifman and Chernin continue to wheel it out fairly regularly.  And Azmaiparashvili, who used it to beat Karpov in a famous game, is an acknowledged authority on it.
