A book has actually been written on this opening: "Alapin French - Tactics for White" by Tim Sawyer, published by Thinkers' press. (This opening seems to be very popular with people called Tim, btw!). The author claims a 77% score for white in his database. I guess it depends on the defensive skills of the black player. It is certainly a way to play an "open" french (Blackmar Diemer style), which might not be the a typical french player's cup of tea. Personally I've only used in blitz, and have enjoyed it.

I am beginning to suspect that certain people at this forum see only one possible use for the e4-pawn, to sacrifice it asap.

I have seen this one before and I cant say I was particularly impressed. When I encountered it I just played 3 .. Nf6 and white is playing some sort of advanced Tarrasch with the bishop on e3 iso a knight on d2, which imo is one of the worst places.

At a deeper glance I see that in his first homework example he lets black make some inaccuracies (7 .. Be7 for example), so I am not taking it too seriously.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Ok so I have grown to love gambits against almost everything. but what do you guys think of 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Be3!? I have scored some nice wins with it and have read up on tim mcgrews article on chesscafe.com

http://chesscafe.com/text/mcgrew34.pdf

This was very helpful just as his caning th caro-kann series was as well.

But I would like to hear other peoples thoughts maybe on Tims analysis or the idea of playing a gambit that isnt in the classical french.

So tell me what ya think
