Thanks MNb I was wondering who around the 2400 level plays it or maybe higher. I would like to start compiling games of its supporters.

4...Bc5 might be playable, but is somewhat dubious (Markovich recommends this via 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.o-o Bc5 5.Nc3). Some sample lines:
5.Nxe5 Nxe5 6.d4 Bd6 and I have always wondered about the simple 7.dxe5 Bxe5 8.o-o. This resembles very much the Italian Four Knights 4.Bc4 Nxe4 5.Nxe4 d5 6.Bd3 dxe4 7.Bxe4, with colours reversed.
5.Nxe5 Nd4!? 6.Be2 d5 7.Nd3 Nxe4 8.Nxe4 dxe4 9.Nxc5 Qg5 10.Nxe4 Qxg2 11.Ng3 h5 is an idea of Fine, disapproved by Keres. You'd rather analyse this thoroughly.
5.o-o o-o (d6 6.d4!) 6.Nxe5 Nd4!? 7.Bc4 d6 8.Nf3 Bg4 9.Be2 (+- Schlechter) Nxe2+ 10.Qxe2 Nh5!? unclear.
5.o-o o-o 6.Nxe5 Nxe5 7.d4 Bd6 and now 8.dxe5!? again.

4...Bb4 is solid, but give White some chances. But you must find something against Marshall's 5.o-o o-o 6.d3 d5!? (more precise than 6...Bxc3 7.bxc3 d5 8.exd5!?) 7.Bxc6 (7.Nxd5 Nxd5 8.exd5 Qxd5 9.Bc4 Qd8 is a recommendation by Pachman) bxc6 8.Nxe5 Bxc3 9.bxc3 dxe4! Marshall scored 64% as Black!

4...Nd4 is equal, though Black must know some theory. But if you like quiet play, 5.o-o Nxb5 6.Nxb5 is not so bad. White says OK, the game is equal, but let's play for it. On ELO 2400+ level White's results are pretty good.

Finally 4...d6 is the Steinitz Variation of the Ruy Lopez. The fact that White still can castle queenside speaks against Black's fourth move.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I have been dabeling in the spanish 4 knights for a couple of weeks now a long with the kings indian attack. After a little discussion in the flank openings section i decided againt the later. So now i am hoping to learn few things. First off are there any major players out there who use is on a regular basis or as a surprise weapon from time to time.

2nd. Out of the 3 main lines i am refering to of course 4...Bc5,4...Bb4,and 4...Nd4 which is considered the strongest for black.

3rd whats your general unbiased as possible opinion. I know every one has there favorite opening but i would like to try and look at this all sides. I dont want another recomendation for a different opening. I want to study this. If any one thinks its flawed please state why and leave a little evidence othwer wise known as actual moves.

If any one else has any more 4th move alternatives for black please list them here as well. Im looking for all angles here. Thanks again.
