Belive it or not i am trying a crazy idea lately! I am playing Rg1 and H3 with the idea that after i go long my pieces will be posed for attack. Fritx says black can equalize easily but when you see it over the board for the first time it can only mean trouble.

I believe it.  Wink

Could you supply specific moves?  Sounds like at least one effective answer would be an early ...d5 by black.

9.0-0-0 might just be the best way to play against the Dragon but these days one has to know a decent amount of theory to play it well.  9.g4 still seems a good practical weapon if you play endgames well.  Theoretically I don't think Black has anything to fear against 9.g4 though.  As far as the Levenfish is concerned I think White has to be more careful than Black after 6...Nc6!  I myself voted for 6.Bc4 which I think is dangerous for Black and is often confusing as White has so many different piece setups.

I tend to play the White side of the Dragon, and I've noticed that most Dragoneers relish the opportunity to go in for the Yugoslav.

I've also noticed that most of the same players sneer at the Levenfish and other similar systems.

I once read an article by Sergei Dolmatov in Opening Preparation(1994) by Dvoretsky and Yusupov.  He stated,

"To me, the Dragon always presents the problem of how to obtain a comfortable game, let alone an advantage.  I never play 9.Bc4; there is too much theory on it, and too little scope for originality.  I like to play chess, not to engage in a contest as to whose opening analysis is more exact.  I am therefore more interested in 9.0-0-0 and 9.g4, both of which are playable." (p.80)

This is an excellent synopsis of the problem I think most players as White face, and Dolmatov gives White two excellent options.  I've played both 9.0-0-0 and 9.g4 with success, and my students have also scored well.  I am no expert on the Dragon, but these two variations seem to give Black plenty of problems in practical chess.  What do you think?

I too have just as much difficulty with the Anti-Sicilians as I do the Open variation but that isn't really the focus of my poll.  I wanted to see how other Dragoneers fared when their opponents let them play the Dragon.  It does go to show, however, that there isn't much sense in knowing the Dragon some 30 moves deep if one isn't familiar with the various Anti-Sicilians.

I have the most problems facing the anti-sicilians..g3, c4, c3 lines as I haven't really studied them and they each could lead to totally different positions than the dragon.

Hardest system to meet OTB?

Someone started a similiar thread in the King's Indian section which made me curious about the way other Dragon players feel about White's various options.  I can't really call myself a true Dragon player, as I've only played it 5 times in tournaments.  I do, however, have a lot more practice with it in speed games.  I know they're certainly not the most critical variations but I've had the hardest time facing the Classical 6.Bc4 (does 6.Bc4 have a name yet?) and Fianchetto variations.  This is partly due to my style but I believe the main reason is that I just haven't bothered to study these variations very much.  The predominate tactical and attacking chess from the other variations being more appealing to my amateur mind.

I do realize I've been very simplistic in the choices I've given and that there are many permutations of the options given.  Also, I've obviously left out certain choices such as 8...Bd7 (Martin's current preference).  Certainly you can voice choices not listed in your responses.
