The old view of the Taimanov, by Taimanov himself, is that the line isn't much fun for most players.  Black seems to play the opening slowly, he allows a nasty king-side attack, and White can set up pretty much any way he wants.

The trick behind the Taimanov is not minding that stuff!  You've got the semi-open c-file and unusual counterplay in the center.  Without going into too much detail, Taimanov's own notes to Lutikov-Taimanov (probably his best game ever) show how hard the Taimanov has always been to play.

Having said all that, I love the Taimanov Sicilian and will continue to play it despite the previously mentioned games!  I'm perverse that way.  And in other ways too, I am sure.

First of all thank you for posting a topic here.
second: I dont think that black is in a lot of trouble. I ran it through chesslive.de and found that white doesnt really have much of a huge advantage. I mean Anand even failed to defeat polgar and he is no fish! I think black has a lot of options as does white and here are a few games trying to be as unbiased as possible as i prefer the Schevenigen myself via the najdorf move order.

So take a look check out some more of the newer games in this line and see what ya find. I think these three games are a good starting point.

Keep me posted on further developments as i am always interested in different lines of the sicilian i would like to play the open siclian one day instead of my beloved smith-morra but alas i need to find ways to combat all of black systems so maybe when i have more time to study as most of it goes to the maze known as the Najdorf and The Kings Indian! So the open sicilian is on my to do list.

What is the status of 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d4 ed4 4. Nxd4 Nc6 5. Nc3 Qc7 6. Be2 a6 7. 0-0 Nf6 8. Be3 Bb4 9. Na4 Be7 10. Nxc6 bxc6 11. Nb6 Rb8 12. Nc8 Qc8 for Black? Or how do you feel about the resulting positions?

Somewhat surprisingly, Norbert Sommerbauer on his new Chessbase Taimanov/Paulsen CD says he thinks Black's position is not fun, and would prefer transposition to schevenigen (!) instead with 8... d6.
