I will chip in something I think is worth considering/remembering--

After 1.c4 g6 2.Nc3 Bg7 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 0-0 5.e4 e5 6.Nge2 d6 7.d4 exd4

After this move by Black, there is no independent value to this line.  We are back in the normal fianchetto variation.  Black has options here:  utilize the Gallagher system, for example look at the game below--

[Event "BIH-chT"]
[Site "Neum"]
[Date "2002.06.02"]
[Round "5"]
[White "Cekro,Ekrem"]
[Black "Loncar,Robert"]
[Result "1/2"]
[Eco "E68"]

1.c4 g6 2.Nc3 Bg7 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 0-0 5.e4 e5 6.Nge2 d6 7.d4 exd4 8.Nxd4 Nbd7
9.0-0 Re8 10.h3 a6 11.Re1 Rb8 12.b3 Nc5

Here---  12... c5 and 12... Qe7 are other significant and reliable alternatives

13.Bb2 Bd7 14.Qd2 b5 15.cxb5 axb5 16.b4 Ne6
17.Nb3 h6 18.Kh2 Qc8 19.f4 c5 20.bxc5 Nxc5 21.Rac1 b4 22.Nd5 Nxd5 23.Bxg7 Kxg7 24.Qxd5
1/2

Or he can use--

1.c4 g6 2.Nc3 Bg7 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 0-0 5.e4 e5 6.Nge2 d6 7.d4 exd4

8.Nxd4  Nc6 is another classic (or well known) line of the Fianchetto variation.

He was ( is?) a GM , and ca 1970 he took part to interzonal , and ( if I remember well ) to candidates
At that time , he won many games with this variation

Hi Smyslov_fan!
If I compare Chess Informant N° 1 to87 , and
TWIC 400 to 541
In the 1st you get about 70 Pomar variations , most ine Wite's favour
In the 2nd only 3 all won by Black
Obviously , something has happened !

Photophore,

I remember reading something about this recently by accident in a game collection somewhere.  I'll try and find out more for you, but my memory is that it's not supposed to give Black any major problems.

A mystery about Pomar variation

There is a mystery about Pomar variation :
1 d4 Nf6
2 c4 g6
3 Nc3 Bg7
4 e4 d6
5 Nge2 O-O
6 g3
Up to 2000 , this variation was quite popular , and results favourable to White
Yet , since 2000 , I find no games
So , I ask 2 questions :
1) Has this variation been refuted?
2) If it has not been , why is it no more played , especially at top level , since it looked so good for White , and Black , with this move order , have no way to avoid it ?
