I was just going over the panno variation in the Starting out book and thought it looked like fun. Joe goes with H5 after H4 and the positons can get wild.

Inn2,

Don't mind the line I posted too much.  I just grabbed that game from the chesspub.exe

The idea I wanted to portray is the importance of ...h5, it slows White down on the K-side.

I think the reason why White played Bg5 there was to pin the knight and allow for g4.  Once the Nf6 is pinned, it can not stop g4 too much.  Not the best move, I agree, but I I am guessing (educated guess) that was the reason.

You know what I mean now ?

Bladez: 10. Bg5?! looks slow, why not 10. Bh6 straightaway?  moves like 10. g4, 10. 0-0-0 also seem to have more to do with the position.
The ideal sequence is somehting like: 10. Bh6 Bxh6? 11.Qxh6 e5 12. 0-0-0 b5 13. g4 hxg4?? 14. h5! and White wins   Wink

Holbox: try looking for Gallagher's earlier book on the Samisch or Ward's new book.

plan 1 here, Holbox.

Gallagher's book on the Saemisch is still good.  He  discusses the Panno there as well.

Some sample lines from the site--

1. c4 Nf6
2. Nc3 g6
3. d4 Bg7
4. e4 d6
5. f3 O-O
6. Be3 Nc6
7. Nge2 a6
8. Qd2  Rb8
9. h4 h5
10. Bg5 b5
11. g4 bxc4
12. Ng3 Nxd4 !
13. Qxd4 Rxb2
14. Qe3

(14. Nd1  Rc2 15. Qe3 Nxg4 16. fxg4 Bxa1 17. gxh5 Bg4 18. Be2 Bxe2 19. Nxe2 d5 20. Nd4  Bxd4 21. Qxd4 dxe4 22. Qxd8 Rxd8 23. hxg6 fxg6 24. h5 Rd5 25. Rg1 Rxa2 26. hxg6 c3 27. Nxc3 Ra1+ 28. Kf2 Rf5+ 29. Bf4 e3+ 30. Kxe3 Rxg1 31. Bxc7 Rc5 32. Bh2 Rxc3+ 33. Kd4 Rgc1

White resigns.)

(14. Qxc4 hxg4  15. fxg4 Bxg4)

14... hxg4 15. h5 Nxh5 16. Nxh5 gxh5 17. Rxh5 c6 18. Bh6 Qb6

19. Qg5 (19. Qxb6 Bxc3+)

This is my KID library:

"Starting Out the KID" by Gallagher (Everymann)
"The art of playing the KID" by Gufeld (Paidotribo)

Obviously it's a basic one but I think it's enough at my level (2000).

Thx

This is a main line of the panno nowadays, although the move-order 8. Nge2 Rb8 9. h4 is more common. There is also 9. g4, 9. 0-0-0 too with similar ideas.  If your books don't mention this, maybe your books are outdated?! Best is to stop h4 with h5 first, then attack queenside with a6/Rb8/b5.

Hi people,

I've been facing quicks h4 in this way.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f3 0-0 6.Be3 Nc6!?
7.Qd2 a6 8.h4

How can the black player punish this over ambitious plan?

Plan1 : First prophilaxis 8...h5

Plan2 : Go for a quick attack over d4 maybe 8...e5 or even 8...Nd4

Plan3 : Continue with the queeside counterplay 8...Tb8

I have some books on the KID but without games going in this way.

Thx
