"short-attack"...

Maybe "Short-attack" is more correct. As in Nigel Short.

Aaah, again I have my old sources to consult. A certain M.Thomas published a booklet on this variation back in 1980. He already gives Kevinludwig's line =+ and mentions moreover Sjamkovitsj' recommendation 10...Nf5 11.g4 dxe5 12.gxf5 exd4 13.Ne4 Bxf5 -+.
7.e6 deserves a ?
So best is 7.Nf3 dxe5 8.dxe5 Ngxe5 9.Nxe5 Nxe5 10.Bb3 with compensation.

The ultra solid way to meet 5.Qe2 though is simply e5 6.dxe5 dxe5 7.Bg5 h6! or 7.Nf3 Nc6. There is no shade of white attack now.

So I combat the Pirc with 4.Be3 preparing castling queenside, followed (if possible) by Fischer's plan h2-h4-h5, Bh6, sac, sac, mate.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

As a Pirc player, I would love it if you would play the short attack. What did you intend after:

1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Bc4 Bg7 5. Qe2 Nc6 6. e5 Ng4.

From my understanding, 7. e6 Nxd4 8. Qxg4 Nxc2+ 9. Kf1 Nxa1 10. exf7+ Kf8 11. Qh4 is a one-trick-pony. White wants to get in Bh6 and Qd4 which would win, but black has 11. ...d5 12. Bxd5 c6 13. Bc4, and now black has either Nc2 or Qd6, when white is just down an exchange.

Also, I played a tournament game a few years ago, that went 7. h3? Nxd4 8. Qe4 Nxf2 9. Kxf2 Bxe5, when I think I really had no excuse to lose, but I found a way to do it anyway.

I think the "correct" way for white to go is 7. Bb5 0-0 8. Bxc6 bxc6 9. h3 Nh6 10. Nf3 c5, and black will have active play as comp for the pawn. Maybe this is what you intended?  Grin

If you really want to blow white off the board, I don't think this is how you'll be doing it. I love to play against this stuff.

By the way, why do they call it the "short" attack. Is it because white's attack doesn't last very long?  Grin Just kidding of course...

The short-attack goes 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.Bc4 Bg7 5.Qe2, planning to push with e5.

Now 5...Nc6 6.e5 Nxd4 7.exf Nxe2 8.fxg Rg8 9.Ngxe2 Rxg7 10.Bh6 Rg8 11.0-0-0, is considered quite good for white.

5...Nc6 6.e5 Nd7 is black`s best.
