Viking has it exactly right.  I've talked with a few titled players who all seem to agree that this way of playing for White is innocuous.  Or as Ford Prefect might say,

"Mostly Harmless".

your 5. c4 reaches a completely normal english. If black now continues 5-,d5, I dont think this can be considered a "good" english (just "normal")....
Play could continue 6. cxd5 Nxd5 7. Nc3 with a Moroczy bind which actually is a quite ambitious setup by black. Play should be quite equal.

If you want to stay with your reversed grünfeld idea, you could of course play 4.d4

I'd be happy with the reversed Maroczy, plus 6. Qa4 looks interesting too e.g.

Yes, I've been considering 4. d4 too, but I was waiting for Black to commit to d5. Not sure if I like 4. d4 cd 5. Nxd4 e5.

I've been investigsting the following move order:

1. Nf3 Nf6 2. g3 c5 3. Bg2 Nc6 4. 0-0 d5 5. d4

with a reversed Grunfeld, or 5. ... e6 6. c4 with a Tarrasch, both of which I like for White.

However Black can avoid this with the move order:

1. Nf3 Nf6 2. g3 c5 3. Bg2 Nc6 4. 0-0 e5

Now White can go 5. d3 with 5. ... d5 giving a KIA, but
I was thinking of 5. c4 which I guess is some sort of English.

My question is, is this a good English variation for White, admitting here that I have only sketchy knowledge of the English opening complex. If so, can you recommend some sources for further study.

TIA,

JEH
