I shall now be buying every book that Tony's ever written, helped research, typeset or proof-read, or indeed any book he's ever himself read.

Well, maybe not, but still if he can solve this, we would all be most grateful. Now if you could only write a book on the Tennison Gambit  Grin

This is very good news. Thanks a lot in advance.  Cheesy

I have downloaded all the messages (yes they all still exist!) to my hard disc and have been looking at the way the Forum works, and I think that there is a very good chance that I can get everything working properly again, but it is going to take me quite a bit if time to recreate everything successfully.
As soon as I finish my update I will try to fix this, so don't despair!

If Craig Evans is the first to thank, I will be second at "the day after tomorrow"

It doesn't matter for my posts, and you can clean them all...and I will be a Baby guest again on the future new Forum.

I will post again about the French, since I have kept all my information in my Bookup database.

So, our fears have been realised...

Ahh well, c'est la vie. Using another old chestnut, "There's no use in crying over spilt milk", so we have to go on to rebuild this forum.

Can I also be the first to thank the Admin for all their efforts in trying to recover what is now lost.

Best wishes,
Craig

Friends,

Unfortunatelly, all the actions taken to restore the forum completely did not produce much of happiness. Even the company behind the server could not recover it and they do not do proper backups.

So, it looks like we are left with whatever we have on teh forum right now.

From now on, we'll create the system to backup the forum database on a weekly basis to prevent such problems in the future.

We appreciate your assistance and hope you understand the situation.

It looks like the core of the problem was in the fact that there was really an overflow of data and it filled up the server space. Everything was ok till the moment someone posted a message and since the server did not have enough space it overwritten the original data file with blank one.

In the nearest future, we'll migrate the forum to the bigger server and will do some adjustement in the forum itself to reflect all the needed structure.

Thanks again for you patience and acceptance of the loss for the moment.

Sincerely,
Admin.

The Administrator.

I accessed the site as guest and I'm able to see the threads.  After loggin also, there seems to be no problem. I don't know if it is my computer acting up or a temperory site problem. Might as well serve as an early warning

*** FOR ADMIN ***:

I tried to investigate and it' seems to me that an database "overflow" occured when somebody posted a reply on Nimzo&Benoni forum.

Why I guess that ?

When you look at Nimzo&Benoni forum you find some strange thread:

" x Tzanikadis_Michael  mixalras@hotmail.com Tzanidakis Michael "

and you put the mouse on Tzanidakis_Michael in the Subject column you see the URL:
    ?board=nimzo_benoni;action=display;num=uare bishop in the Benoni

With usual threads, after "num" you find a number and not a string. The string seems to be part of text comment about the Benoni.

It looks like a text overflow in posting a thread.

This overflow has an effect in the French forum, because there is another strange thread which looks like the end. You find "ail.com" after num.

Maybe, you can find the the thread with a database tool and try to delete it.

you can pull a cache of the more recent stuff out of temp files. if this would have happened a couple of weeks ago, i would have been able to pull up every thread i had looked at for the past year or so, but i finally cleaned my cache out not long before the crash.

I suspected something like this would happen sooner or later, so I kept my own back-up of some of the more interesting analysis posted in the various sections.

It is doubtful that all the previous posts will ever be recovered, but lets hope that with any luck some of the more informative ones re-materialize.

Here is to keeping ones fingers crossed.
