Well, first I'd like to thank everyone who sent emails pointing out that the Forum was down, it's nice to know that there are so many people who find it useful.
What happened was that the server hosts upgraded the server from CloudLinux 7 to CloudLinux 8 ("something we only have to do once every 5+ years" apparently), but they didn't mention that they also updated the version of Perl, and the new version broke the site! I managed to find newer versions of some of the files and now it seems to work again.
If anyone notices something that doesn't work correctly, please leave a post here, many thanks! Smiley

I've been wondering why I kept getting "Welcome Guest" when I was logged in. I finally figured out one of my bookmarks was still using http:// instead of https://.

Now that Welcome Guest is not distracting me, I notice the "Latest Updates" section of the banner is not populating.

I'm using the latest version of Firefox on Windows 10.
But now suddenly the mark-all-read is ok?!
I haven't done any changes on my PC. Maybe there were some problem with cookies etc. on my side. I don't know.

Seems something is wrong with "mark all read" function
I still got messages (in the General section) marked as "New" after using it on the start/first forum page.

I've never tried that, I just use it on individual sub pages. So, I just had a go and it appears to have worked for me ... although now I don't know which posts I haven't read! Roll Eyes I'm currently using Chrome on Windows 10, what are you using?

But jesseo.com I only trust by extension, i.e. you trusted them enough to set up the javascript relationship.

Yes, it's Jesse Gersenson's private site, and I trust him completely - he's done a lot of work for me on the Forum and on the ChessPublishing site - but I understand where you're coming from, 'better safe than sorry'! Smiley

Can't you simply enable JS, but just for the Forum?
  1. Safari on iOS: No.
  2. At work: Javascript is enabled, but cross-domain scripting is blocked.
  3. Home laptop: Since I already need a workaround for 1 and 2, why bother with a different method here? Plus, my copy/paste method has some other benefits...
    • I get a copy of valid pgn, in case I want to save it.
    • I get to use an engine on the analysis, if I'm in the mood.
Really, it's the cross-domain scripting that bothers me. I trust you, Tony, and by implication chesspub.com and chesspublishing.com. If you sell your sites, I will most likely know about it and will reevaluate that trust for the new owner. But jesseo.com I only trust by extension, i.e. you trusted them enough to set up the javascript relationship. If they change ownership, how will I know that? How will I know that the new owners won't do something malicious with the javascript? I'm not saying it's a likely scenario, but it's a troubling possibility and not worth the headache.

Yes, with javascript disabled I get a blank space instead of the viewer. So I have a workaround:
  • right-click on the link at the bottom,
  • copy the url,
  • run that through a desktop script (mine is in awk),
  • paste the resulting pgn into e.g. xboard or winboard.

I may have posted a copy of that script before. It would be easy to do in any other scripting language.

Not sure if this happens to others, but pgn, as in either posting with [pgn] function or just viewing pgn posted by others, on my laptop is showing nothing. Just completely blank space in the post with no board nor moves.

The board index has a lot of duplication of older threads

I've just rebuilt the message index, it looks better now although there might still be a few duplications somewhere. Hopefully they will disappear eventually!

You're right, that's weird. I suppose it happened when I re-indexed the Forum at the beginning. I don't know quite what I can do about that, apart from maybe doing it again and then deleting any remaining doubles.

It's obviously an indexing problem. If there are duplicates, then there might also be missing threads. But I don't have an easy way of knowing if any are missing. (I do have some urls saved so could check if they show up in the list, but that won't be easy.)

they do throw a SSL certificate in for free, so we will be on secure HTTPS pages before you know it! Smiley

Ok. so I have managed to install it, so we should stop seeing 'insecure site' warnings. There may be some problems (links to 'insecure' sites, some external images, ...) which cause new warnings. If anyone sees these or has any other problems please let me know (here), as there may be fixes that I can apply.
