I've been wondering why I kept getting "Welcome Guest" when I was logged in. I finally figured out one of my bookmarks was still using http:// instead of https://.

Now that Welcome Guest is not distracting me, I notice the "Latest Updates" section of the banner is not populating.

I'm using the latest version of Firefox on Windows 10.
But now suddenly the mark-all-read is ok?!
I haven't done any changes on my PC. Maybe there were some problem with cookies etc. on my side. I don't know.

Seems something is wrong with "mark all read" function
I still got messages (in the General section) marked as "New" after using it on the start/first forum page.

I've never tried that, I just use it on individual sub pages. So, I just had a go and it appears to have worked for me ... although now I don't know which posts I haven't read! Roll Eyes I'm currently using Chrome on Windows 10, what are you using?

Yes, it's Jesse Gersenson's private site, and I trust him completely - he's done a lot of work for me on the Forum and on the ChessPublishing site - but I understand where you're coming from, 'better safe than sorry'! Smiley

Can't you simply enable JS, but just for the Forum?
  1. Safari on iOS: No.
  2. At work: Javascript is enabled, but cross-domain scripting is blocked.
  3. Home laptop: Since I already need a workaround for 1 and 2, why bother with a different method here? Plus, my copy/paste method has some other benefits...
    • I get a copy of valid pgn, in case I want to save it.
    • I get to use an engine on the analysis, if I'm in the mood.
Really, it's the cross-domain scripting that bothers me. I trust you, Tony, and by implication chesspub.com and chesspublishing.com. If you sell your sites, I will most likely know about it and will reevaluate that trust for the new owner. But jesseo.com I only trust by extension, i.e. you trusted them enough to set up the javascript relationship. If they change ownership, how will I know that? How will I know that the new owners won't do something malicious with the javascript? I'm not saying it's a likely scenario, but it's a troubling possibility and not worth the headache.

Yes, with javascript disabled I get a blank space instead of the viewer. So I have a workaround:
  • right-click on the link at the bottom,
  • copy the url,
  • run that through a desktop script (mine is in awk),
  • paste the resulting pgn into e.g. xboard or winboard.

I may have posted a copy of that script before. It would be easy to do in any other scripting language.

Not sure if this happens to others, but pgn, as in either posting with [pgn] function or just viewing pgn posted by others, on my laptop is showing nothing. Just completely blank space in the post with no board nor moves.

I've just rebuilt the message index, it looks better now although there might still be a few duplications somewhere. Hopefully they will disappear eventually!

You're right, that's weird. I suppose it happened when I re-indexed the Forum at the beginning. I don't know quite what I can do about that, apart from maybe doing it again and then deleting any remaining doubles.

It's obviously an indexing problem. If there are duplicates, then there might also be missing threads. But I don't have an easy way of knowing if any are missing. (I do have some urls saved so could check if they show up in the list, but that won't be easy.)

Ok. so I have managed to install it, so we should stop seeing 'insecure site' warnings. There may be some problems (links to 'insecure' sites, some external images, ...) which cause new warnings. If anyone sees these or has any other problems please let me know (here), as there may be fixes that I can apply.

Preview works if I start typing. But it stops working if I quote someone. Actually if I quote someone and then delete the quote, Preview still doesn't work. I think the only way to get it working again is to use the Post Message button.
Edited:
Safari on iPad, iOS 12.1.1

Just checking. Preview started working briefly with the edit tag, but then stopped. It might be slowness, the page is always reloading as I type.

It would have been nice if some kind of notice was posted on the chesspublishing.com website briefly advising subscribers that management was well aware of the forum issue and working to resolve it as soon as possible.

Any who, welcome back.

It is possible that some things no longer work as they should, in which case please post here and I will try to fix them.
Assuming the Forum runs reasonably fast we will probably stick on this server, but if not I will plan a move to something else.

I revived this old thread, which suggests that there is a problem with the Forum every ten years!!
Early in the morning of the 1st January the Forum went AWOL. When I awoke the next day I discovered a number of emails from members who were wondering where it had gone! So, before setting off for my next tournament that afternoon I had a look at the usual suspects, spammers, hackers, etc. and could find nothing odd, so I got in touch with the server hosts who said that no server software had been updated, Very strange,
When I realised that there was nothing I could do I got in touch with the main YaBB software specialist and she downloaded the Forum onto her testbed, Apparently everything worked fine!
She thought that the server host had change something, but might not even know what that was! I asked them again, very politely, but they thought it was a problem with the Forum. Of course, nothing had been changed here for over two years, so it seemed impossible that it could be that.
Nothing was progressing, and meanwhile I had finished my tournament and come home. We decided to move the Forum to another server (as it turns out, to another continent!)
So, to cut a long story short, we have finished setting things up on a new server, we've changed the domain nameservers, and finally we are up-and-running again!
Thanks to everyone who sent words of support and encouragement! Smiley

I wouldn't miss email notifications myself since I check the site regularly.

Hmm, I must be an adict, especially finding myself having to contact the support address late last night - how can I sleep without knowing chesspub will be there for me in the morning   Wink

Unfortunately, as they never thought to warn me that they were closing the site (!) I didn't know there was a problem until I suddenly received loads of emails from members! I immediately sorted it out (well at least I managed to get the site back, albeit in 'Maintenance mode') with a few emails, otherwise I would, indeed, have left a message on the ChessPublishing site. Smiley

Regarding email notifications, I agree that losing them is a pain, but apparently they consume a lot of resources, and also cause the site to exceed the '200 email/hour' barrier imposed by the Web host (which is why some members, including myself, weren't even getting them!), so it was either that or something more important. The RSS still works fine, though! Smiley

It may be that the only way around these problems is to convert to different Forum software, or pay for a dedicated server - but these are not cheap!

Email notifications are a sad loss. I wasn't receiving these before yesterday anyway, but I hope sincerely that you can negotiate their return in the near future -- it's tedious trying to follow multiple threads quickly without them.

The Web host turned off the Forum late last night (GMT, that is!) without warning and put up the rather startling This Account Has Been Suspended
Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible.
page, which gave a lot of subscribers the impression they were being personally suspended! Shocked
It seems the Forum was using too many resources for their liking (a victim of our own success?!) and so I have turned off a number of functions (like email notifications) to keep our resource usage down.
Sad Sorry about this, hopefully it is only temporary.
It would have been nice if they had warned us beforehand ...! Angry

I've just done an enormous search and replace, and hopefully these all work again?! Anyway, if anyone finds any internal links that still don't work please post the details here! Smiley

I got this message before as well, ever since I upgraded to IE 7 - I assume it is a security feature that is turned on by default?!

Yep the forum uses an inherent copy/paste I think.

Since the Forum returned, I get a message from Windows Internet Explorer asking me if I wish to grant access to my clipboard.
What's going on?

I got this message before as well, ever since I upgraded to IE 7 - I assume it is a security feature that is turned on by default?!

I missed the Forum too ...  Smiley
The sys admin bods didn't like it too much on our servers, though, they reckoned it was a major security risk. Sad

Tony - good to be back - I thought you'd simply forgotten to pay your hosting fees ! We missed the forum badly. Victor looks to have had a great result with 8/9 which must be his best result for a while .

For security reasons I had to move the Forum to a new server. Sad
I would have done it earlier but I couldn't get hold of the necessary files, they needed to be disabled apparently. Undecided
If anyone notices anything different, or something that doesn't work properly, please post here. Smiley

I never thougt I was so addicted to the forum. Huh
In each case, I am very glad to see it is working again.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

Hopi bon to be back, but strangely enough, what I missed most was MNB's idyllic descriptions of life at the edge of the bush...
Should I start to think about my retirement ?

Actually I didn't even know you could do this! So, I've switched mine on too! Smiley
I had a peek in your profile and I think it was because you hadn't specified where you lived on the map - I stuck a point somewhere in the middle of a Fjord and that seems to have done the trick ... ! Smiley
Incidentally, does anyone have any problems with the 'Live Preview' function when they are writing an email? Questioning

Dont know if this is a problem with the forum or just me  Undecided, but:

I have tried to make my norwegian flag become visible, without success.... Am I the only one?
I have specified the location specific info and selected "Flag" in the options meny, but still nothing happens....
Still I can see that a few do have "their flags" right now. What is the secret?

Clearly not the most important problem in the world, but still....

Thanks for getting the forum up and running again  Smiley

I agree it's a bit hard to read, it could be the background colour and the text colour that are too similar. Actually, the whole new design will take some getting used to - but it's great that the forum is back, so I don't really want to complain.  Cheesy

So a big thanks to the admin and gang who must've put a lot of effort into getting it going again!  Smiley

Hello everyone, good to be back.   Smiley
Great job Tony and Chesspub for the work! But is it just me or is the text very small in size?! hard to read imho.

I also noticed quite alot more free time in my life while the forum was gone!

p.s. the TopNotch smiley looks like this now:    Grin (less sniggering, more laughing) Where's the man?

A big hello to all fellow Forum devotees.  I have missed you all.  In particular, my mornings at work have been much more productive while I have not been spending the first 30 minutes looking around here ...  Wink

A big thank you to Tony and the team for getting us back up and running.

Let's hope we can repay the effort by continuing to make this the best chess site around.

Play nicely now y'all ...

Thanks GM Kosten and all for bringing back what was once one of the best chess websites around.  I hope ChessPub can recuperate from its hibernation.

As you can see the Forum is finally back! Smiley
We had enormous problems getting the new software to work on our servers, and then had difficulties converting all the old messages to the new format - many thanks to s_m_b at YaBB for all his help here!
The final problem was that we recovered all the 'lost' messages to an orphans folder and I have spent the last week moving these (2000+ threads!) to their original boards. I have almost certainly made some mistakes (or alternatively, maybe they are now in more appropriate places!) and so if you see any glaring examples of misclassification please email the board moderator or me with the details! Embarrassed
