Well, all White is trying to do in playing the Réti is to lay the right positional foundations for an attack - so in that sense it is an aggressive opening.

There is a school of thought that an early clash of forces simply dissipates White's initial edge by bringing matters to a head too quickly.  The Réti seeks to avoid that - hence, to name but one example, Kasparov using it to defeat Karpov in the do-or-die 24th game of their 1987(?) match.

And as John Watson has pointed out in his Flank Openings updates lately, the English (and we can put the Réti in the same category for these purposes) has the advantage that you will not run into twenty-fice or thrity moves of 'main line' theory in e.g. the Petroff.

If sometimes we fly too close to the sun, at least this shows we are spreading our wings.

Hi all,

for a while now I have been analysing games starting with 1. Nf3 and developping towards the Reti opening. I always thought that this opening was dull and lead to lengthy positional manoeuvers but I was surprised to discover some gems of attacking chess!

This seems to confirm my idea that it is now what you play that matters most, but how you play it! Look at this game between to GMs:

Event "Bundesliga 0405"
Site "Germany"
Date "2004.11.12"
[Round "8"]
[White "Hickl,Joerg"]
[Black "Johannessen,Leif Erlend"]
[Result "1-0"]
[Eco "A14"]

Do some of you also use the Reti as an agressive opening?
