Silly me, I meant 4.Bb5.

In fact, 4...a6 is a very sensible reply to 4.a3. After 5.d4, Black can play 5...ed4 6.Nd4 Ne4! 7.Ne4 Qe7 8.f3 d5 and compared to the refuted 4.d4 ed4 5.Nd4 Ne4 variation, White cannot play the best 9.Bb5 and therefore does not have any advantage in this position.

White could instead play 5.Be2 or 5.g3, but it is hard to believe that this can pose Black any opening difficulties.]

I recommend you also examine 4.Be2, which was covered in a recent SOS volume.

Would be ironic if Black's fourth move there is 4...a6.

Then what did White play on his 4th? 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.??? and 5.Bb5.

Well 5.Bb5 is no weak move.

He must still be moving!  lol - quite the long move.  I have recently been playing the Four Knights, but only the Halloween Gambit so far with good results.  It would be nice to have alternative weapons to play around with, however, such as this (despite the claim that it gives Black easy equality).    I don't think there is anything wrong with playing an equal position, if I am satisfied with the opening results.

I am currently moving to another flat; but as soon as the dust has settled, I'll be happy to provide you with some of my games.

Christoph, could you give (some of) your games ? I haven't found many of them, and those I found are  hardly representative, I fear.

Thanks. This has been debated in another thread in the 1.e4 e5 section. My opinion was and is, that 4...Be7 idea 5...o-o and 6...d5 offers safe equality.

He is referring to 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.a3!?

I do play the "Gunsberg" regularly, however I even play the "Accelerated Gunsberg" (1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.a3!?). I am quite satisfied with the results: It is easy to play and you get comfortable positions; not necessarily what most people would call advantageous, but still easy enough to play.

So I can conclude that the impact of the article (book/magazine) is not to be overestimated...
