How one should play after 1. b4?
It was the question that I was coming across recently buzzing around even in the remotest parts of the world! For instance, on the following web page:
http://www.olimpbase.org/index.html?http%3A%2F%2Fwww.olimpbase.org%2Farticles%2F...

I give some suggestions below.
A “serious option”:
(1) Picarda - Pytel,K [A00]
Clermont Ferrand, 1991
[Pytel]
1.b4 e5 2.Bb2 Bxb4!
I have already won several games following this path. Hungarian grandmaster, A. Adorian (see chess databases) is also an advocate of this rather crude approach. However, many a chess manual frowns upon an exchange of the side b4 pawn to the central e5. Meanwhile, the practice clearly indicates that white cannot dominate in the centre. Furthermore, the black’s pression on “e” and “d” lines could turn out to be more effective than white pawns’ majority in the centre.
3.Bxe5 Nf6 4.c4 0-0 5.e3 Re8 6.Nf3 d5 7.cxd5 Nxd5 8.Be2 Be7 9.0-0 c5 10.Bb5?! [10.d3 Nc6 11.Bb2 Bf6=/+] 10...Bd7 11.Qb3 Bxb5 12.Qxb5 Qd7 13.Na3 [13.Qxd7 Nxd7 14.Bb2 Nb4-/+] 13...Nc6 14.Rab1 Ndb4! 15.d4!? a6 16.Qe2 Nxe5 17.Nxe5 Qd5 18.Nac4 Diagram
18...cxd4 19.exd4 Rad8 20.Ne3 Qxd4 21.Nf5 Qf4 22.Nxe7+ Rxe7 23.Rfd1 Rde8 24.Ng6 hxg6 0-1
So, the incentive of the move 2... Bxb4 could be the fact that white’s strategy involving a gain of a space advantage on the queenside is down the drain!

A „tricky” option:

(2) Analysis [A00]
1963
[Pytel]
1.b4 c5!? 2.bxc5 e5 3.Bb2 Nc6 4.Nf3 Bxc5 [4...e4 5.Ne5 Bxc5 6.Nxc6 Qb6 7.Qc1 Bxf2+ 8.Kd1 f6] 5.Nxe5 Qb6 Diagram
6.Nd3 Bxf2+ 7.Nxf2 Qxb2~~ 8.Nc3 Nb4 9.Rc1 Nxa2  etc.

***                       ***                            ***
Option - „Pachman’s recommendation”, so called „mole in the pocket”
(3) Analysis [A00]
1965
[Pytel]
1.b4 a5!?
Playing 1... a5!? Black tries to take the control over the c5 square and transpose the game into the King’s Indian defence mood.
2.b5 e5 3.Bb2 d6 4.e3 Nf6 5.Nf3 Nbd7 [5...g6 6.d4] 6.c4 g6 7.d4 Qe7 8.Be2 Bg7 9.0-0 0-0 10.a4 b6 etc.
***                              ***                                       ***
Option - „Uhlmann’s recommendation”, so called “elephant’s trunk”
(4) Analysis [A00]
1972
[Pytel]
1.b4 d5 2.Bb2 Qd6
Black aims at dominating in the centre.
3.a3 [3.b5 Qb4] 3...e5 4.e3 Nf6 5.Nf3 Nbd7 6.c4 c6 7.Be2 g6
There is no doubt, the bishop will be better placed on g7 than on e7.
8.0-0 Bg7 etc.
***                    ***                                ***
A „free development” option:
(5)Analysis[A00]
[Pytel]
1.b4 d5 2.Bb2 Bf5 3.e3 e6 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.b5 c5 etc. Diagram
***                           ***                                  ***

A „natural development” as an option:(6) Analiza [A00]
[Pytel]
1.b4 d5 2.Bb2 Bg4!? 3.h3 Bh5 4.g4 Bg6 5.Bg2 c6 6.Nf3 e6 [6...f6!? 7.d3 e5] 7.Ne5 Nd7 etc.

The Hiss attack is cute!! another provocative way is to play English Attack style with 1. b4 e5 2. Bb2 f6!? 3. b5 d5 4. e3 Be6 and so on (Sokolsky-Veresov, see chesspub ebook).

Just another possible line against 1.b4 is the "Hiss-Attack" (named after its inventor) 1.b4 e6 2.Bb2 Qh4!?.

While 3.b5? fails to 3...Qb4 winning the b5 pawn, the main idea is 3.a3 f5 4.Nf3 Qh6!? followed by b6, Bb7, Nf6, g7-g5-g4 and a massive king side attack. Smiley

So to sum up we may conclude that after 1.b4 White may equalise with accurate play.

Quite a ringing endorsement, I can see the Book title now 'Equalising with 1.b4' by A. Drawalotski.

Black has some nice sacs available. Three examples: 4.e3 o-o 5.Nf3 Re8 6.c4 (White can avoid the tactics with 6.Be2 Nc6 7.Bb2 d5 8.o-o Bf5) d5 7.cxd5 Nxd5
a)8.Bb2 Nc6 (Nf4!? is also interesting here) 9.Be2 Rxe3!? (Qd6 is a very sound move) 10.fxe3 Nxe3 followed by Nxg2+.
b)8.Bc4 Bg4 9.Bb2 Nxe3! 10.fxe3 Rxe3+ and Black is winning.
c)8.Be2 Rxe5! 9.Nxe5 Qf6 10.f4 Nxe3! agains is very good.
So indeed, who cares about White's centre majority? Go for White's throat!

Yes, indeed.  Enough with 1...d5, 2...Qd6 already.

I was wondering if you guys could shed some light on how you answer 1.b4 or what sources are out there that could help me. Next week, I am facing an opponent at my local club who loves to play 1.b4

I normally play Nimzo/Gueler1 and French as well as occasionally a Dutch Leningrad with black.

Thanks and all the best

Play 1...e5!  2. Bb2 Bxb4  3. Bxe5 Nf6.  Black's game pretty well plays itself, in classical fashion, with ...0-0, ...Nc6.  So White has more center pawns, big deal.  Black has more activity and, after ...d5, more space.

I wrote an article on 1 b4 d5 2 Bb2 Qd6!. It can be found at.

http://chessville.com/instruction/Openings/TRNT/Orangutan.htm

The line is stronger than it first looks. A good path is not easily found for White.

Good Chess! Keith

That's not establish.

My

1....  d5 2...  Qd6  I brought that up in the context of discussing Bb2 by White, the Sokolsky, and I already made that point very clear earlier.

2.Bb2   Qd6

still holds true.

Angry

1.b4  d5
2.Nf3  Qd6
3.c4   e5

This looks very interesting and logical for Black.

Agreed! Which means that ...d5, ...Qd6 against 1.b4 isn't necessarily so strong a system. That's all I wanted to establish.

Yes, OK, you're right: it is not so easy for Black to hold the pawn there (although I doubt he would play 6...bxa4).

But this is all rather academic - it's all the more reason why 2...Qd6 is probably not to be recommended against 2.Nf3, as I originally suggested.

I'm not sure I like the look of 4.e3.  Can't Black just play 4...b5 and hold the pawn (5.a4 c6)?  White has no b2-b3 lever to break open the queenside, and Black can even think about taking on b4 at some stage unless White defends the pawn.

1. b4 d5 2. Nf3 Qd6 3. c4 dxc4 4. e3 b5 5. a4 c6

Now White plays 6. Nc3 and if ...bxa4 7. b5! with very good activity. 2...Qd6 doesn't look so strong any more, does it?

If 1.b4 d5 2.Nf3 Qd6 3.c4 dxc4 then besides 4.Na3 there is also 4.e3.

Meanwhile, after 1.b4 d5 2.Nf3 Bg4 I like 3.c4!?

We weren't talking about the Sokolsky Opening so much as what to play against 1.b4. You suggested 2...Qd6 gave White "no chance of an advantage." You may be right, but you won't clinch the argument by quoting a game that uses 2...Bg4. So, if you know the line very well, what do you suggest for White after 1.b4 d5 2.Nf3 Qd6 - I thought 3.c4 was interesting.

AG

Well, at the risk of putting words in BladezII's mouth, I think he was suggesting 2...Qd6 in the specific position after 1.b4 d5 2.Bb2.  There is no reason why Black should feel honour-bound to play 2...Qd6 against all White second moves.

Nonetheless, I like your suggestion.  1.b4 d5 2.Nf3 Qd6 3.c4 dxc4 4.Na3 could certainly lead to some interesting play.  Wink
