I have no trouble downloading the PGN files at all, does anyone else have this problem?

Are you "downloading" the files, or are you opening them in the flash viewer?  Turn off flash, try again, and tell us what happens.

I wish to view the pgn using my own analysis program.  I will not use the flash viewer.

No, it is not a cache problem.  Before posting, I tried 3 different browsers (FireFox, Chromium, and lynx).

The data should be presented as "application/x-chess-pgn" somehow.  A SEPARATE link to the flashified stuff can also be presented.  At one point during the process over the past year or so, there was a separate pgn link (I think).

Charles, try clearing your cache, the problem may be on your end.

I sometimes have problems with very large pgn files, but that problem has already been mentioned.

I am unable to get to see or get to the contents of any pgn attachments.  I get a

"Service Unavailable
Server currently undergoing maintenance. Webmaster: please contact support."

error regardless of whether I'm logged in, have javascript, flash, cookies, etc. enabled or not.  I just want to see the pgn as text to import into my own analysis program.  If the file is a presented as a ".pgn" file, it would automatically open my analysis program.

Previously the pgn was malformed, but at least salvageable.

Why is presenting a TEXT chess file format as TEXT so hard to do?!

[Addendum:  The appropriate MIME type is "application/x-chess-pgn".]

Well, a good idea but not with just 50 kB ?! Especially PGN files tend to get pretty big ones.

50kb should be large enough for 10 annotated games, but I can always increase this if there is a need?

We have decided to allow PGN files to be attached to the messages for a trial period to see how it goes - there is a current limit of 50kb per file. Smiley

the 'Download game in pgn format - beta version' link was broken - thanks for pointing that out.

Temporary solution, when you click 'Download game...' simply gives the pgn on the screen.

Let me know if this is useful.

btw, there is still a 2,000 character limit which I'm trying to fix.

Some more info:  The pgn is actually buried in the last error message, but it is malformed in at least two ways:

1. There is a [Comment "auto-generated from"] at the beginning.  The "Seven Tag Roster" must come first, before any other tags.

2. The Result tag is given as [Result "1"], which is invalid.

The pgn spec is archived in several places. Here's one:

http://www.chessclub.com/help/PGN-spec

(link fixed, I hope)

The pgn-extract command line utilities can be used to normalize pgn files, and are freely available.

I don't know when it stopped working, but when I click on the "Download game in pgn format - beta version" links, I now get a page with several errors like this one:

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /var/www/jesse.cz/htdocs/www/pgn.php:2) in /var/www/jesse.cz/htdocs/www/pgn.php on line 41

Just to be clear:  The flash reader is useless for me.  I prefer to open pgn attachments using an external viewer.

Jupp53 is probably right. A number of characters, the slanted single quote is one, get automatically encoded - perhaps by the browser. For the more common characters I've made rules to replace them with their ascii equivalent.

the slanted single quote appears correctly in the pgn when viewed with Scid (probably works with CB too).

Knowing this without using CB-progs there's the hypothesis: It's the German ' - is it different to the same looking English sign in ASCII or ANSI?

I've just noticed the following problem: When I copy and paste my notes from chessbase to here, the "'s" dont' scan properly.

Here's an example. Please look at my comments to move 6:

The same form me. I only got a blank screen.

What kind of proof is that?

Chessflash automatically creates the html-code with the flash viewer when you paste the pgn. No need to install anything.

Here's an example of how it looks, note that it's possible to start with a position too.

Hmm, I don't see anything, although that is probably because I have Flash turned off for security reasons!
I still don't understand how this would work on the Forum. :-[
