Hi to all,

I am resurrecting the thread after 4 years of silence.

The question:
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c4 Nc6 4.Be2 g5

However rare it may be, I did definitely read about the position but now I have forgotten where... Sad Sad
  • Delchev: Safest Sicilian ?
  • Sommerbauer: Paulsen ?
  • Rogozenco: Anti-Sicilians ?
    or
  • another book !?

Please help! I am very annoyed...

well firstly - dont even bother about White playing 4.d4, it wont happen...

so 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c4!? Nc6 4.Nc3 (4.Be2!? also is possible) - then the ...g5 idea is certainly worth a look, but I doubt will find much of a GM following as ultimately it is just a weakness.

so the main choice is 4....e5!?, or 4...Nf6 (Rogozenkos choice I think)

after 4...Nf6 5.Be2 d5 6.exd5 (safest I think) exd5 7.d4 we reach a symmetrical position but Black still needs to play some careful moves to equalize.

In short, as Rogozenko says, Black needs to know what he is doing!

4...g5!? looks like fun, right?  That's kinda why I posted it.  It looks like a good way to try and mix things up a bit.  Also Strptzr, the line you gave looks like the least interesting open sicilian I've ever seen.  Granted, it gives black full equality, but isn't Qh4 more fun??

Yeah, White is not obliged to continue with the 'sicilian sequence' (d4, cd4:, Nd4) and the resulting positions are no fun...

After,

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. c4 Nc6 4. d4 cxd4 5. Nxd4 Nf6

I would not worry.  White's attempt to build a bind when Black is so well placed will backfire.

and

1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 e6
3. c4 Nc6
4. d4 cxd4
5. Nxd4 Nf6
6. Nc3 Bb4

[6... d5 7. cxd5 exd5 8. exd5 (8. Nxc6 bxc6 9. e5 Ng4) 8... Nxd5 9.
Bb5 (9. Ndb5 Nxc3 10. Qxd8+ Kxd8 11. Nxc3 Bc5) 9... Nxc3 10. bxc3 Bd7 11. O-O
Be7 12. Re1 O-O 13. Bd3 Bf6 14. Rb1 Re8 15. Rxe8+ Bxe8 16. Rxb7 Nxd4 17. cxd4
Bxd4]

7. Nxc6 bxc6
8. Bd3 d6

or even (8... d5)

should be fine for Black.

Anybody knowing what this beast is called (and perhaps some inkling how to tame it) ?
