"What about a Bc5 system? Mark Morss has done some good research in his column Hard Chess on 3...Nf6 4.o-o Bc5. Shirov has had success with Bc5 in the Archangelsk."

Hello,

I was interested in the lines mentioned above too. The problem seems to be an Anand v Leko game from 2000. In this game Anand's idea of playing Bb6*N, instead of Bc4, makes it very hard for black to ever play g5, because Bb6 and Nc6 can not be transfered to defend king-side. (Anand annotates game in chessbase, and seems to take sadistic pleasure in playing second rate moves, to show black can't do anything.) Earlier Leko had been successful in games against Topalov, when the later sacrifced peice for two pawns. All these games came after Mark Morss's articles.
In the Archangelsk/Moller with Bc5, there are some nicely annotated games in Anand's best games book. Also Anand played a nice novelty against Topalov in recent Corus tournament.

Bye John S

I'd say the Chigorin as well. The Moller is good too, but I think the Chigorin setup is more "universal". Ie against basically any white set-up it is decent. Plus unlike the Zaitsev closed there is no forced draw.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

so you want a solid defense to the ruy that offers black some counterplay and chances for initiative. hrm. i recommend the main line.

Maybe you could also play what Mamedyarov did in the recent Wijk aan Zee which is covered this month.

What about a Bc5 system? Mark Morss has done some good research in his column Hard Chess on 3...Nf6 4.o-o Bc5. Shirov has had success with Bc5 in the Archangelsk.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Well, the Marshall springs to mind, but most White players will avoid it.

Have you considered the Archangel or the Møller?

I am an attacking player , even with Black , and I need initiative
Formerly , I used to play Open Defence
I had good chances with Dilworth or McKenzie , but 9 Nbd2 has killed all that
so , I am looking for a defence that gives Black more chances of Initiative
What is most effective? of course the Schliemann , but I will not play it
( I want something more strategical )
What can you propose me?
