However, I am not sure if it will be fun to read without some knowledge of Russian, there is a lot of prose and explanations in it.
Shipov wanted to publish it in english and even contacted Everyman, but they said that 575 pages is way too much and is not gonna bring profit. And he didn't want to sacrifice material, because in fact his original notes have 800 pages so even 575 in the russian edition is already a sacrifice. This is sad, since he is one of the biggest experts in hedgehog and a great writer, both GMs and amateurs are raving about this book.

Can this be true? if so it is very very sad - a quality book by a strong author on his pet subject and it cannot be published because it wont fit the neat formula books the publishers prefer?! Surely there is a publisher out there who can get this translated and published...it is sure to be a massive seller

According to my database, Shipov has played 42 slow games in Hedgehog, with a record +21=17-4
His last loss was in 1994 (against Greenfeld). I wonder if anybody has this kind of record in his favorite opening.

A serious question for Hedgehog fans (i'd like to play Hedgehog myself). How to you get a position you want after 1.c4 c5 2.g3!? (as prorosed in The Dynamic English book?)

Hedgehog specialists Suba and Shipov try to reach the English Hedgehog as Black via 1 c4 Nf6, switching systems after 2 g3 with 2...c6! and 3...d5.  I also seem to recall Kasparov commenting that this is pretty well instant theoretical equality against 2 g3.

White does have a few tricks based on Qb3 or Qa4 if Black develops with ...Bf5 or ...Bg4 but Black should be fine if he knows what he's doing.

Shipov certainly lost at least the game Greenfeld-Shipov 1994 in the Hedgehog, and what's more according to my analysis didn't play very well in it, although I am sure if Shipov were ever to analyse any of my games he would be saying the same about me and more.

Not to detract from his book though which I'm sure is very good judging from his games and analysis of a few years ago on kasparovchess.com.

Serious answer - you can't: avoiding this is one of the main motives for 2 g3.

As consolation of course 2...g6 3 Bg2 Bg7 4 Nc3 Nc6 is completely equal, but I understand not everyone cares for it.

There's also a very long series of articles by Wahls in the German Schach magazine, which ran for ages. And Khalifman is covering a white repertoire against the hedgehog (reached via the English) in his opening repertoire according to Kramnik.

Thanks for the info. It looks like the perfect book for me (a lot of prose with explanation), except for the Russian. I still am going to order it, and try to learn some Russian in the summer holiday. Maybe it is an idea for Shipkov to publish it like an e-book, fur sure already one customer.

It's Shipov, not Shipkov (Sergey Shipov is a much better author and much stronger player, he had ELO around 2670 several years ago). Check out his Black games in hedgehog and see if you like them. I remember he said something like he didn't lose a single tournament game with hedgehog. Of course, he didn't play it as much as he wanted because there are many ways for white to avoid hedgehog and his opponents usually did avoid it.
I should mention that this book is not a repertoire book. Even though it is slightly tilted to the black side (since it is his pet opening for black), he considers both black's and white's options. And the book is written as a history of the system, what moves people tried in the past (starting from 60 years ago) and why they don't work. He says it is the only way to get a profound knowledge of the opening.

I read about it, 524 pages! And it seems all to be good stuff according the russians.

However, is the book easy to order?
Is the book readable for someone with a russian dictionary, but without knowlegde of Russian?
Does someone know if an english version comes out?

The (by far) best book on Hedgehog is Shipov's "Hedgehog". Unfortunately only the russian edition came out.

I find the video, somewhat disappointing. It gives a lot of dry-how to reach the hedgehog, and stops when it can become interesting.

However it also contains one very well analysed game of Mathias himself, showing all the good analyse we miss which could have been in part 2. Which is never published.

Zeller is a must buy (lots of good original analyses), even if your english is not good and if you only play the english hedgehog.
