Where are the moderators for the General Chess Section? It's starting to flow over with spam.

The thread "Template Monster Collection" in the general chess section looks like Spam to me, isn't it?

Cheers,
Tom

It is not exactly spam, but Amnesac's stupid joke in the General Chess section has nothing to do with chess either. So I would not mind, if GM Tony Kosten would delete that one too.

Thanks! I've deleted the message, and I've deleted the member.  Smiley Of course, he may want to register again, in which case I will start getting rougher! Shocked

GM Kosten,

Its really nice to come in & see the place so clear of spam for once. Well done! Thanks for your efforts.

I agree, let's try to keep this a nice Forum where people can discuss chess openings without being hassled. Smiley

And football of course! Especially if it concerns something pro Ajax! Wink

Incidentally, I haven't seen any spam since registering became compulsory (just for posting, of course), which is good news. I notice on the YaBB forum that this is such a commmon problem these days that they are working on new tools to help counter it.
I actually had a look at one of the worst spammer's sites, and their forum was closed down 'because of abuse'! Shocked

I don`t see why this is an issue at all.

People who are really interested in chess and want to post can afford the 2 mins it takes to register. This forum is the best chess-related forum on the internet.

For people who are interested in chess and wants to make a contribution or have questions, the 2-min effort should not keep them from posting.

On the other hand, spammers might find after a while that it becomes too tedious to register, just to have their right to post cancelled.

I see that GM Kosten now has made registering compulsory. Well done! Let`s keep it this way and the forum might still be a nice place to stop by.

I still like the suggestion, if it's possible, to make guests have to enter a word from a graphic to prevent automated guest spam. Since this would hardly be an onerous task, there would be no chance of deterring the current regular guest posters who do contribute, while ending any chance of automated guest spam.

If this is not possible, then preventing guest posting looks like almost the only option.

By now, it does seem high time to test 'members only' for a month, as the spam seems to increase every week.  Cry

This observation is very correct.  By looking at the votes so far, it does show that the majority favours the 'members only' route. (almost 2/3rds majority) So in the spirit of true democracy, it would be the right thing to do.

I'm not too convinced abt the 1 month thing tho. I think it should be a permanent thing. Spammers can always come back after 1 month & do their nonsense again. Tongue

It is unfortunate that such drastic measures should be taken, but I have to agree that only registered members should be able to post.  Probably have to set up something that prevents automated registering too.

I must say, with the increasing frequency of the spam, I think that preventing guest posts is probably the best route to go for the moment.  Some of the other compromises (like requiring guest posts to be approved) also seem good, if technically feasible.  Hopefully the "permanent guests" will understand the decision and register.
