Agreed, although putting the K on f8 is often pretty essential after 10 d5. I'm certainly going off ...Nxd4, unless Jonathan can rehabilitate it, and exchanging on e2 looks like a better bet, even though White gains a reasonable initiative for his pawn.

I was delighted to see Jonathan recently supplying some coverage of the fashionable 1 e4 c5 2 c3 d5 3 exd5 Qxd5 4 d4 Nc6 5 Nf3 Bg4!?. Along with 6 dxc5, critical must be 6 Be2 cxd4 7 cxd4 e6 8 Nc3 Qa5 9 h3 Bh5 10 d5!? when Jonathan examined Najer-Lautier: 10...exd5 11 Nd4 Nxd4 12 Bxh5 Nc6!? 13 0-0 Nf6 14 Bg5 Be7 15 Bxf6 Bxf6 16 Nd5 Be5. Black is still to castle here and so, instead of 17 Qb3, what about 17 b4!? ? This looks quite dangerous to my eye, but perhaps there is a way for Black to equalise/refute it. The main point is that 17...Qd8 18 Re1 0-0 19 b5! Bxa1 20 bxc6 Bf6 21 c7 Qd6 22 Bg4 is rather awkward for Black.

Indeed. After 22.Bg4 one threat is 23.Re6!

Richard - is not 16.Re1+ also a bit unpleasant for Black? 16...Kf8 appears to be forced.
