	It does seem risky, but also playable and so this is an interesting idea. I do see on my DB that it's been played by one of the 'A.Rodriguez'es, successfully too, but I'm not sure which one! Must admit that I'm not sure 8 Nge2 is so great after 7...Qa5. Black's just made a fairly ambitious move and so I'd prefer to counter that with another slightly ambitious and unusual (after Be3 and Qd2) one in 8 f4!?.

	It is indeed very risky for Black to part with his K Bishop in return for White's b-pawn. It is not a matter of any specific variations - although the 13. Bc1 line you provided looks quite reasonable- but rather the permanent dark-squared weaknesses on the Kingside that the kamikaze cleric leaves in its wake... It is this consideration among others that pushed me to develop an alternative defence against the Closed : 1. e4 c5 ; Ktc3 Ktc6 ; 2. g3 e6 ; 3. Bg2 Ktge7 Now, 4. Ktge2 Ktd4 ; 5. d3 (5. Ktxd4 is another story) Ktec6 ; 6. Be3 Be7 ; 7. Qd2 Bf6 ; 8. f4 d6 ; 9. 0-0 Qa5 and now Black is truly threatening to win a pawn with 10. ...Ktxe2 This is not the place to discuss White's alternatives to Ktge2 and Be3, but I should to mention that Black usually delays castling short (...0-0-0 remains an option) and simply meets g4 with ...h6 and sometimes Ktf4 with ...g6 since the Knight is badly placed here. 	I have been running across this line of late: 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 g7 4.Bg2 Bg7 5.d3 d6 6.Be3 e6 7.Qd2 Qa5 8.Nge2 Nd4 9.0-0 And now I'm wondering why no one ever seems to comment on 9...Nxe2. We had a thread here a couple of months ago on a line 5...b5 where it was decided that Black should be careful about giving up his KB. I assume something similar applies here, although it's not quite as clear, I don't think. In any case, 9...Nxe2 seems like such a plausible move, I would expect someone to have at least written something like "Every Russian schoolboy knows not to play 9...Nxe2." But I can't find anything on it at all. Is the "refutation" 10.Qxe2 Bxc3 11.bxc3 Qxc3 12.Rab1 Ne7 13.Bc1 Qa5 14.Bb2? A related question: Maybe 8.Nf3 would be a shade more accurate to avoid this altogether? Or, I have noticed that after ...Nd4 White often avoids any possibility of an exchange with Nc1. This seems to be very popular in the ...Qa5 lines as White can hit the Q with Nb3.
