Any of you still use the ECO encyclopaedia to study openings? It used to be a wonderful tool . I think they stopped publishing those books.

I see. According to the -very- dated view that is is a sideline of the QGD...

This is the problem with using the ECO codes, theory was different in the days when this system was invented - just look at how big the c3 Sicilian is now, and it is all in B22!

Where the heck is the Catalan (E01-E09) ? All covered under the neo-catalan (A14) ?

Ruslan's site 1.d4 d5

I don't know if this will be helpful to anyone else or not, but it's something I find useful. Please let me know if there are mistakes in the list.  I think this may have been posted before but I have made some corrections (hopefully) and updated the section authors (5-31-06).

"1 e4 e5", GM Olivier Renet, ECO Codes C20- C99

"French Defence", GM Neil McDonald, ECO Codes C00- C19, A04 & A08

"Dragons", GM Chris Ward, ECO Codes B27, B34- B39 & B70-B79

"Open Sicilians", GM Tony Kosten, ECO Codes B32- B33, B40-B69 & B80-B99

"Anti-Sicilians", GM Jonathan Rowson ,ECO Codes B20- B31, & B50-B55 (The majority of B27 is covered under the Dragon section.  The rest of B27 looks most likely to come from an Owens Defence.)

"1 e4...", IM Andrew Martin (Some appearances by IM John Cox on the Alekhine) , ECO Codes B00- B19

"1 d4 d5", GM Ruslan Scherbakov ,ECO Codes D06- D07, D10-D69 & E01-E09

"d-Pawn Specials", GM Eric Prié, ECO Codes A45-A49, & D00-D05

"King's Indian", GM Victor Mikhalevski, ECO Codes A41- A42, A53-A55, A68-A69 & E60-E99 (I had forgotten that A41-A42 and A53-A55 were covered here.)

"Nimzo and Benoni", GM John Emms (IM Richard Palliser has been handling the Benoni lately) ,ECO Codes A43-A44, A56, A60-A67, A70-A79, E00 & E11-E59

"Daring Defences", GM Glenn Flear, ECO Codes A40, A50-A52, A57-A59, A80-A99, B00, D08-D09, D70-D99 & E10 (B00 is another code that is split between sections-see 1 e4 Various)

"Flank Openings", IM John Watson, ECO Codes A00- A39, without A08 (but with some of A04 not covered in the French section)
