I think there is a game Karpov-Kamsky (0.5-0.5) of their world championship match about a decade ago.

Another possibility besides Qc2 and a4 is Qb3. I have seen a lot of lines where there is a sac on d5. How about this?  Cool

Yes, after 4. Ktc3 d5, the threats of ...dc and ...d4 force 6. cd ed ; 7. d4. Now Korchnoï thinks that White may have a miniscule edge, but the Black side feels comfortable and there's plenty of leeway for proving that g3 is "more" out of place than ...a6

As i said earlier I know very little of the flank openings - but I am just curious. What is the problem with 4.Nc3 instead of 4.Bg2 to avoid the ...b5 push. I presume the problem is an unfavourable transposition to something else  Sad

YES! Sorry...

5.b3 is playable, but hardly a refutation IMHO.

1.c4 Nf6 2.g3 e6 3.Nf3 a6 4.Bg2 b5 5.Nd4 c6 6.cxb5 axb5 7.Nxb5 cxb5 8.Bxa8 d5 9.a4?! [probably......9.Qc2!? is the answer] 9...Qa5 etc...   


However, As a long time flank guy (mostly Reti and Larsen stuff)   I've never have been too troubled   when black plays e6 and Bb7...even here with an b5 thrown in.

Over the years I've developed some neat stuff to combat this....

romanishen employs this line, i decided to avoid the issue so i steered clear, i think its viable and annoying at least for white, sure there is a response just could not figurte it out.

Yes, this is completely respectable. Korchnoï has championed the Black side in quite a few games. I'm quite fond of the line, as there aren't many other ways for Black to avoid tedious play against 1. Ktf3 Ktf6 ; 2. c4 e6 ; 3. g3.
I'm not sure about 5. ...c6 though. If I recall correctly the generally accepted continuation is 5. ...d5 ; 6. cb e5 ; 7. Ktf3 e4. Will post more extensively if/when I have more time...

Not a flank openings expert but yes I know that is a standard line for Black favoured by a few GM´s, if I did play the flank openings I would be investigating something concrete against it as it is quite a decent system
