Hi,
In the Sveshnikov:
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5 6.Ndb5 d6 7.Bg5 a6 8.Na3 b5 9.Bxf6 gxf6 10.Nd5 f5 11.c3 Bg7 12.exf5 Bxf5 13.Nc2 0-0 14. Nce3 Be6 15. Bd3 f5 16.Qh5 (A MAIN LINE).

Is Black's best continuation 16...., e4  OR
                                            16...., Ra7
according to modern theory. What are the crucial differences between the two choices?!

I'm glad I could help.

I really enjoy reading and studying Rogozenko's work on the Sveshnikov, so it was a joy to go through parts of it again and refresh my memory.  The essays and evaluations in this book are so insightful, I just love studying the Sveshnikov for either color because of this book!  Many people, including strong IM's and GM's think the Sveshnikov is a boring opening, but I find it highly interesting, maybe I'm just a chess peon though!

Good luck in the Svesh!

Here is Rogozenko's opinion regarding 13...Be6 and 13...O-O:

"This line (13...0-0) is currently more fashionable than 13...Be6, which can be explained by the fact that Sveshnikov specialists such as Kramnik and Leko these days prefer to play 13...0-0.  In my opinion 13...0-0 is not theoretically superior to 13...Be6, but 13...0-0 leads to a different type of position, which in many ways is more attractive.  Black often gets the chance to attack the opponent's king--a rare event in the 13...Be6 line.  On the other hand White also has many resources here, so 13...0-0 leads to interesting double-edged play."

14.Nce3 Be6 15.Bd3 f5 16.0-0 and here:

a) 16...Kh8 17.Qh5 e4 18.Bc2 Ne7! 19.Rad1 Rc8 20.f3 Bf7 21.Qh3 Nd5 22.Nd5 Bd5! 23.Rd5 Qb6+ 24.Kh1 Qe3 =

b) 16...Ra7 17.a4 Ne7 18.Ne7+ Re7 19.ab5 ab5 20.Bb5 d5 21.Ra6 and here:

b1) 21...f4(e4!? Sveshnikov) 22.Nc2 (Re6 line: "I will stand my ground by affirming that after 25.Re1 White can play on without risk, while Black must work for the draw.") 22...Bc8 23.Ra8 Qd6 24.Nb4 Bb7 25.Rf8+ Bf8 26.Bc4! Rd7 27.Ba2 Kh8 unclear.

b2) 21...Kh8 "The main advantage of this move is that Black avoids the endgame mentioned above."

b2a)22.f4 d4 23.cd4 ef4 24.Rf4 Bc8 25.Ra3 Bh6 26.Rf3 f4 27.Nc2 Bg4 28.b4 Bf3 29.Rf3 Qb6 30.Qd3 Bg7 "with mutual chances."

b2b)22.Be2 (Sveshnikov) d4 23.cd4 ed4 24.Nc2 Bd5 25.Nb4 Bb7 26.Ra1 Be5!

b2c)22.Qa4 f4 23.Nc2 Bf5 24.Nb4 Ref7 25.Rd1 Qg5! 26.Nd5 Bg4 27.Rd2 (27.Rd3 Be2 28.f3 Qh4! 29.Rd1 Bd1 30.Qd1 e4 "gains black a clear initiative.") Bf3! 28.Bf1 e4(Rg8) 29.h4 Qh4 30.Ra8 Qg5 31.Rf8+ Rf8 32.Rd4! Rd8! "White does not have a clear way out yet."

Ex, if you are a Sveshnikov enthusiast, you really should get this book, even if you have to beg someone you know to buy it for you, it is worth it!
