I'd be interested to know which alternatives you mean, Eddie -- are you thinking of Modern move-orders, or alternative Pirc options for Black in the 5 ...0-0 line?

The Pirc has its problems, but I would still take my chances in it against most opposition (certainly up to 2500 level). For the record, the Austrian is causing some problems in the traditional mainlines with 5...c5 and 5...0-0 6.Bd3 Na6 7.0-0 c5 8.d5 Rb8 9.f5!?, but Black has a lot of alternatives.

All the best,

Eddie

It is? Although a few years old now, NCO gives most of the main Pirc lines as equal or plus-over-equal. While not anything like as popular at top level as 1...c5 or 1...e5, I don't think the Pirc is unsound, or objectively any worse than most of the other replies to 1.e4.

The Pirc in Black and WhiteJames Vigus

I'm a little concerned about the choice of author. He's an FM who has few games in my database since 2001.

I hope this isn't just a rehash of old material, but then there hasn't been much movement in Pirc theory lately (rather a boon for an amateur like me playing it  Cool ) and nothing to indicate that it is in "deep trouble". Why does TRIAD think that is true, although it might come down to differing opinions on what "deep trouble" is  Wink

I would much like to see an new addition of Pirc Alert! as it presented the material in a new and interesting fashion, so maybe this is what James will do.

Hi,
I don't wish to play anything that is in deep trouble.  Sad

Could you please list which things are in deep trouble and things which aren't? Many thanks for your help! Grin

Is there a list I may consult? Undecided

Been skimming through various publishers websites and alas nothing seems to be up and coming on the Pirc! I vaguely recall a rumor about an update to Pirc ALert but so far this is only a rumor. I know the PIrc is in deep trouble as far as theory is concerned and I'M just wondering if any GM's or IM's have given this defense a shot in the arm as of late......
