Don't know what your Fritz says, but my Fritz says +- after 8.g6 f5
a) 9.exf6 Qxf6 10.Nb5 Kd8 11.gxh7
b) 9.Nb5 h6 10.Nd6+ Ke7 11.b4
c) 9.Rxh7 Rxh7 (Rg8 10.Nb5) 10.gxh7 Qh4 11.Nb5

Are you sure, we are debating the same Alekhine-Chatard? The usual one is 5.e5 Nfd7 6.h4 and not 5.Qg4 a3.  Wink

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

my score vs Alekhine-Chatard is +10 = 4 - 0  Cool ........... 2 IM and 2 FM included !........ well my recomendation: is something like that: 1.      e4 ; e6
2.      d4 ; d5
3.      Cc3 ; Cf6
4.      Ag5 ; Ae7
5.      Qg4 ; a3
6.      h4 ; A x g5
7.      hg5 ; c5
not is possible 8. g6 because 8....f5; my idea is attack and destroy  the white center and 0-0-0.....or if white dont 0-0-0 maintain my king in the center or 0-0.... black is ok all the time..... well fritz says that! Wink

Greetings,
Neil's June 06' update he looked/analysed  a game I submitted with the move 5...Ng8!? as a viable alternative to 5...Nfd7.  The idea is simple Black plans on taking the pawn if offered..play Nc6-Bd7 & 0-0-0 and the g8 Knight will be helpful in defending the K-side.  I don't think it would be proper to show any of Neil's analysis here.
Regards,

Has there been any recently published analysis on Moro's 6...Nc6?  I win with it almost every time in blitz, but lost the only time I tried it OTB.  (The opening wasn't to blame.)

Well, critical to me seems the line :

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e5 Nfd7 6.h4 Bxg5 7.hxg5 Qg5 8.Qd3
I would recommend 8...h6 now.

I play 6...c5. Some people are afraid of the Alekhine-Chatard Attack as black, but I'm not. In fact, I relish getting it OTB. I've analyzed some of the main lines using chess engines and they seem to think that black is fine. (although they could of course be wrong). Nonetheless, I think that 6.Bxe7 is probably the slightly stronger move. I have several of the recent opening books that cover the AC attack and they also seem to say that.

With regards the Watson book: I too was hoping he would cover the AC attack in his third edition of "Play the French". I looked at the lines he gave for the Burn, actually played through them all, and I came to the conclusion that I preferred to stick with playing 4...Be7. For some reason I think the pawn structures appeal to me more -- maybe since the board's often divided with both sides having play on their own wing. I did appreciate the other chapter he had on the classical: the 4.e5 variation. I hope he'll include 4...Be7 in his next edition; I also hope he'll include the 7...a6 lines there as well, as they can be similar to the 4.e5 variation.

On his DVD, Ziegler recommends 6...0-0.  It may be worth looking more deeply into, but Black is certainly inviting an attack.

Hello, just had time to look at McDonald's new update on 6...c5. Still looks a little suspicious to me, and Black's queenside looks a little congested in the games presented. I think i will prefer 6... Bxg5 and 6... h6.

While I still play Maroczy's 6...a6 line quite often, I also quite like the way Morozevich played 6...Nc6.  The books all say it's no good, but none discuss Moro's handling (as far as I know).  If you're looking for something fresh, this may be it.

Of course, there has been some buzz about the Accepted being Black's best winning try.  I have a feeling that it's more of a buzz-saw for White than for Black.

There's some interesting stuff on 6 ...c5 in the latest update -- anyone any thoughts on this?

A little off topic because I have no recommendation myself, but I was pretty disappointed when Watson's Play the French 3 ducked this whole issue with 4...dxe4.  If he ever makes a 4th edition I'd be curious to see what he recommends.

I don't really play either side, but somehow got interested in analyzing it from White's perspective a while back -- the thread http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1107036355 has some discussion.  This links to a summary post of mine (#28) Scholar wrote on 07/06/05 at 04:36:31:
h6 and c5 both seem like solid options to me.

For what it's worth, my impression remains that 6...c5 and 6...Bxg5 are probably Black's best chances to win.  I feel like someone posted some interesting analysis about grabbing the pawn, but I don't remember who or where off the top of my head.

Would any of you French Classical gurus care to give your opinion, what should one play against the Alekhine-Chatard (1) for a win; (2) for a draw (if different)?
