Thanks for ressurecting this Thread. Pirc Alert does have 8. ...de as another option, and has 8. ...g5! TN.

I posted this back in 2006 which was pre-Pirc in Black & White, and I'd not gone back to check what it said. It's all in there - Game 80, p 347 c), with the Sadvakasov-Ponomariov game reference.

Hmm, James puts 8. ...Nxf4?! and assesses my improvement as slightly better for White. Yes, I can appreciate how good the Bishop pair can be in this sort of position. Not a major problem with the move 8...de option, and who knows, there may be other mprovements for Black lurkng in the 8. ...Nxf4 line.

And there is always Plan B with 5. ...c6 which is the way I used to play it, amongst others.

4. Bg5 is quite a popular choice, so it's good to have options.

As Vigus says: "Perhaps Black does indeed have to give up his bishop for the knight on c3 at some point, but that seems to be an admission that his opening has gone wrong."
Vigus recommends to go for dxe5 at move 8 as in Macieja-Nyback (European Championship, Antalya - 2004). The went on with 9.Qd8-Kd8 10. 000-Bd7 11. fe5-g5 12. Be1-Nc6 13.e6!?-fe6 14. g4? (Bb5-Kc7 15. Nge2 seems more natural to Vigus) -Nf4 15. h4-Ne5 16. Bb5-Kc7 17. Nf3-a6 18.Bd7-Nd7? and Black losed the game. In place of Nd7, Black could have plaid Nf3 and then: 19.Bg3-Bc3 20. Bf4-e5 21. Be3-Bd4 22.Bd4-ed4 with no problems up to Vigus.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

I spent some time looking at this last night. I am afraid, I could not find anything better for Black in this TN. So, 10.... Bxc3+ may indeed be busted.

I got the chance to try out one of the Pirc Alert TNs this weekend. The line in question is on p273 after 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Bg5 Bg7 5. f4 h6 6. Bh4 c5 7. e5 Nh5 8. dc Nxf4 9. ed g5 10. Bg3 Bxc3+ TN

The game continued 11. bxc3 Nc6 12. Bxf4 gxf4 13. Bb5! Qa5 14. Bxc6 bxc6 15. Qd4 Rg8.

Now here White lost the plot somewhat and went down after 16. Qe5 Be6 17. Kf2 Rg5 18. Qh8+ Kd7 19. Qxa8 Qxc5+ 20. Kf1 Bc4+ 21. Ne2 Bxe2+ 22. Kxe2 Rxg2+ 23 Kf3 Qf2+ 24. Ke4 Qe3+

However instead of 16 Qe5, White has 16. Ne2! with a much better position.

I think Black is ok with 10. ...Qa5, as per Sadvakasov-Ponomariov 1999 with after 11. Qd2 Qxc5 12. 0-0-0, instead of 12. ...0-0, 12. ...Bxc3 looks ok for Black.

What do you forumites think of the Pirc Alert bust and my improvement?

Of course the lesson here is to always check out TNs in sharp positions carefully  Wink

TIA
